Women of the Bible - The Canaanite Woman : A Mother of Unwavering Faith
Matthew 15:21–28 | Mark 7:24–30
The Canaanite woman is one of the most remarkable examples of persistent faith found in the New Testament. Although Scripture never reveals her name, her encounter with Jesus left a powerful testimony of humility, determination, and a mother's love. Matthew identifies her as a Canaanite woman, while Mark describes her as a Greek, Syrophoenician by birth. She was a Gentile, someone outside the nation of Israel, yet she recognized Jesus as Lord and believed He had the power to deliver her daughter from demonic oppression.
When she approached Jesus in the region of Tyre and Sidon, she cried out desperately for mercy. Her daughter was suffering terribly, and this mother knew that Jesus was her hope. At first, Jesus did not answer her. Even when His disciples urged Him to send her away, she continued pleading. Jesus explained that His mission was directed first toward the lost sheep of Israel and then spoke of the children's bread not being given to dogs. Rather than turning away, the woman responded with extraordinary humility and faith, saying, "Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall
from their masters' table." (Matthew 15:27 KJV)
Her response revealed something beautiful about her faith. She understood that even the smallest expression of Jesus' power was more than sufficient to meet her daughter's need. She did not demand a miracle or claim that she deserved one. Instead, she appealed to His mercy, trusting completely in His authority. Jesus answered her with words that would forever distinguish her in Scripture: "O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt." (Matthew 15:28 KJV). Her daughter was healed that very hour. According to Mark's account, when the mother returned home, she found her daughter lying on the bed, delivered from the demon.
What makes this woman's story especially meaningful is that she came to Jesus not for herself, but for her child. Her love compelled her to seek help, and her faith sustained her through a difficult encounter. Her story also reveals that God's mercy was not ultimately confined to one nation. Although Jesus' earthly ministry was directed first toward Israel, this Gentile mother's faith demonstrated that His compassion and power extended beyond those boundaries.
The Canaanite woman reminds us that faith does not always receive an immediate answer, but it can remain steadfast in the waiting. Her story encourages us to bring our deepest burdens before Jesus, to intercede for those we love, and to trust in His mercy even when we do not fully understand His ways. We may never know this woman's earthly name, but we know something far more significant: Jesus Himself declared that her faith was great.
She came to Jesus carrying the burden of her daughter's suffering, and she returned home to find her daughter healed. Her name was never recorded, but her faith was never forgotten.
