This is not a political series, but a biblical series to explore what Jesus and the New Testament said about the church's interaction with government.

To examine the government's responsibility to the people and the people's responsibility to the government.

We will also be discussing what is the biblical principles on the church and God‘s government towards society.

We hope to bring biblical clarity to this area of life so we can do it better.

🇺🇸✝️ MEMORIAL DAY THROUGH THE LENS OF THE NEW TESTAMENT ✝️🇺🇸

Honoring God • Honoring Sacrifice • Honoring Those Who Protect and Serve

🔴 JESUS TAUGHT BOTH DUTY TO GOD AND RESPONSIBILITY TO GOVERNMENT

📖 Matthew 22:21 (KJV)

21 They say unto him, Caesar’s. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s.

🔵 KEY THOUGHTS

• Jesus recognized legitimate civil government.

• Christians can be faithful citizens while remaining devoted to God.

• Taxes, laws, and civic responsibilities have a place in God’s order.

• Worship, ultimate allegiance, and our hearts belong to God alone.

• Patriotism should never replace devotion to Christ, but love for country and love for God are not enemies.

⭐ APPLICATION

• Pray for your nation.
• Vote and participate responsibly.
• Respect authority while keeping Christ first.

🔴 GOVERNMENT IS PART OF GOD’S ORDER

📖 Romans 13:1–4 (KJV)

1 Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.

2 Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.

3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same:

4 For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.

🔵 KEY THOUGHTS

• Government was not man’s idea—it is part of God’s design for society.

• A world without law eventually becomes a world ruled by fear, violence, and chaos.

• God uses civil authority to help preserve order and protect innocent people.

• The phrase “he beareth not the sword in vain” acknowledges the authority given to governments to restrain evil and defend society.

• Police officers, first responders, judges, and military personnel often serve in roles connected to this principle of protection and public safety.

💡 PRACTICAL LESSON

• We may not always agree with every decision made by leaders.

• Yet Scripture teaches respect for the office and appreciation for those who serve the public good.

• Memorial Day reminds us that many paid a great personal cost so others could live in peace and freedom.

🔴 GIVE HONOR WHERE HONOR IS DUE

📖 Romans 13:7 (KJV)

7 Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.

🔵 KEY THOUGHTS

• Honor is a biblical value.

• Gratitude should be expressed, not merely felt.

• Remembering sacrifice is an act of honor.

• Memorial Day provides an opportunity to publicly thank those who gave their lives serving others.

❤️ PRACTICAL APPLICATION

• Thank a veteran.
• Pray for military families.
• Teach younger generations the value of sacrifice and service.

🔴 PRAY FOR THOSE WHO LEAD

📖 1 Timothy 2:1–2 (KJV)

1 I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;

2 For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.

🔵 KEY THOUGHTS

• Christians are commanded to pray for leaders.

• Prayer is not political—it is biblical.

• Healthy leadership benefits entire communities.

• Peace and stability often flow from wise leadership and righteous decisions.

🙏 PRAYER POINTS

• Pray for national leaders.
• Pray for local leaders.
• Pray for military leadership.
• Pray for first responders.
• Pray for wisdom, integrity, and protection.

🔴 GOVERNMENT EXISTS TO RESTRAIN EVIL AND PROMOTE GOOD

📖 1 Peter 2:13–14 (KJV)

13 Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme;

14 Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well.

🔵 KEY THOUGHTS

• Government’s intended purpose is protection—not oppression.

• Laws help protect the vulnerable and preserve order.

• Communities flourish when justice is administered fairly.

• Freedom survives best when good people are willing to serve and protect others.

🏛️ REFLECTION

The freedoms many enjoy today were preserved because generations before us were willing to stand in harm’s way for others.

🔴 HONOR THE KING

📖 1 Peter 2:17 (KJV)

17 Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.

🔵 KEY THOUGHTS

• Honor and respect should characterize Christian behavior.

• We can disagree respectfully without becoming dishonorable.

• God calls believers to model dignity, kindness, and respect.

• True honor reflects the character of Christ.

🔴 JESUS PRAISED THE FAITH OF A SOLDIER

📖 Matthew 8:8–10 (KJV)

8 The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed.

9 For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.

10 When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.

🔵 KEY THOUGHTS

• Jesus honored genuine faith wherever He found it.

• The centurion understood authority, responsibility, and obedience.

• Leadership carries responsibility as well as privilege.

• Service and humility often accompany great leadership.

⭐ LESSON

Great leaders are often those who understand both how to lead and how to serve.

🔴 SOLDIERS WERE CALLED TO SERVE HONORABLY

📖 Luke 3:14 (KJV)

14 And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages.

🔵 KEY THOUGHTS

• John did not tell soldiers to abandon their profession.

• He instructed them to act with integrity.

• Authority must always be balanced with character.

• Strength without integrity becomes dangerous.

• Character transforms power into service.

🔴 JESUS ACKNOWLEDGED DANGEROUS TIMES

📖 Luke 22:35–36 (KJV)

35 And he said unto them, When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked ye any thing? And they said, Nothing.

36 Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one.

📖 John 18:11 (KJV)

11 Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?

🔵 KEY THOUGHTS

• Jesus acknowledged that danger exists in a fallen world.

• Yet He refused to advance God’s Kingdom through violence.

• Christians are called to be peacemakers.

• Peace is best preserved when good people courageously stand against evil.

🔴 THE HEART OF MEMORIAL DAY

📖 John 15:13 (KJV)

13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

🔵 KEY THOUGHTS

• Jesus ultimately fulfilled this verse at Calvary.

• Throughout history many men and women have willingly sacrificed themselves for the safety of others.

• Memorial Day reminds us that freedom is costly.

• Every cross in a military cemetery represents a family that paid a price.

• Gratitude honors sacrifice.

❤️ REMEMBER

Freedom is never free.

Someone stood watch.

Someone answered the call.

Someone left home and never returned.

Someone gave their future so others could enjoy theirs.
