A*O SĀ O LE TALA LELEI | GOOD NEWS SUNDAY ✝️

On the first Sunday of September, Samoans commemorate A*o Sa o le Tala Lelei, a special Sunday remembering the arrival of the Gospel of Jesus Christ in Samoa.

In 1830, missionaries of the London Missionary Society, led by John Williams, arrived at Sapapali‘i, Savai‘i, bringing the Christian Gospel to Samoa.

Nearly two centuries later, the impact of that moment can still be seen throughout Samoan life. Christianity became deeply woven into our families, villages, traditions, and the fa’a Samoa. From generation to generation, our ancestors passed down not only our language and culture, but also their faith in God.

Today we remember those who carried the Tala Lelei to Samoa, those who accepted and nurtured it, and the generations of Samoans who continued sharing the Gospel throughout Samoa, the Pacific, and around the world.

May we continue the work entrusted to the generations before us by sharing His love, His Word, and His Good News with the generations that follow.

What is Pentecost Sunday?

Pentecost is a major Christian holiday celebrated 50 days after Easter. The name comes from the Greek word pentēkostē, meaning “fiftieth.”

According to the Bible, Pentecost marks the day when the Holy Spirit came upon Jesus’ disciples in Jerusalem, as described in the Book of Acts (Acts 2). Christians believe this event gave the disciples courage and spiritual power to begin spreading Jesus’ teachings publicly. Because of this, Pentecost is often called the “birthday of the Church.”
