Weekday Religious Education for Logansport and Cass and Fulton Counties

Weekday Religious Education for Logansport and Cass and Fulton Counties WRE provides a system of Christian religious training and Biblical instruction that corresponds with HOW W.R.E. BEGAN? IS W.R.E. LEGAL? W.R.E.

In January of 1955, approximately 150 enthusiastic delegates from 46 area churches responded to an invitation by the Cass County Ministerial Association to join with the Advisory Board who was meeting for the purpose of organizing Weekday Religious Education of Logansport and Cass County, Inc. The Board elected officers and additional members were added to the Executive Committee. Other committees

were also set up and a constitution was written and accepted by the March Board Meeting. Work began to obtain permission from each county school trustee and the city school board for a time released program for fourth grade students. This program began in the fall of 1956 with 695 pupils in 33 classes from 19 schools. The cost of the entire program was underwritten by 52 participating churches who pledged the yearly total of $8,000. operates within the “Released-Time” guidelines. The released-time movement was inaugurated in Gary, Indiana, in 1914. The Superintendent of Schools, Mr. Wirt, initiated a plan where children would be released to attend religious classes off-campus. That first year, 619 students left the public schools to attend classes in churches during one period a week. This program (first accepted in Indiana) has now become an accepted practice throughout the United States. Released-time has also been supported by the 1948 and 1952 Supreme Court rulings, which recognize the rights of parents to direct the religious education of their children and permits released-time religious education to be conducted during the school day. In order to remain legal and within the "released-time guidelines," W.R.E. classes must be held off a school's campus, receive written permission from a parent or guardian for each child to attend, and cannot receive funds from the school or tax dollars.

What an exciting week on the Wally bus!!! Last week the lesson was about Palm Sunday and this week they are following Jesus through the last week of His life. I visited our classes at Lewis Cass Elementary School where Angie Wisler asked the students what they would be doing if they knew they only had a week to live. Most of them said they would spend want to spend time with family and friends. But what did Jesus do??? He continued to teach and serve the people. He even washed His disciples feet at The Last Supper that he would eat. It was no time to sit back and wait for the week to end. Wow! That is a challenge I need to be reminded of--to live each day as Jesus did.

Again this year, as part of the Easter lesson, each student will receive a copy of the "BIBLE INFOGRAPHICS EPIC GUIDE TO JESUS" book--a special gift provided by a WRE alum and his wife! Our hearts were warmed as we saw lots of interaction as the students skimmed through the pages of the book--excited to take it home with them at the end of the day. Thank you so much for providing this gift for our students!

Finally, each teachers has their own unique teaching style and fun ways of including biblical principles into the lessons. Mrs. Wisler's includes a fun little song that the students request often--"2 Little Choices." Enjoy!!

The students at Fairview Elementary School learned that Jesus performed miracles when He was here on earth to show God's love for the people. Today they learned how He turned 5 loaves and 2 fish into enough food to feed thousands of people. Jesus also does miracles in our lives today. A couple of these students shared what they like about the red bus, too.

I recently visited a couple of our WRE classes at Columbia Elementary School. What a fun group of students! Some of them shared their thoughts about coming on the Wally bus. The Students have been working on learning the verses that correspond with the "Romans Road to Salvation." Our teacher, Donna Lewellen, enjoys adding sign language motions to help the students remember these powerful verses. Enjoy!

Thanks for another great TWELVE-MILE BREAKFAST this past Saturday (3/7/26). It was still dreary at 11:00 AM as I took pics of the sign and said my "good byes"--the breakfast was behind us. But the rain and thunder showers certainly didn't stop everyone from coming. What a great crowd of our faithful supporters and some wonderful new faces, too. Over $9,200 was raised from the breakfast and bake sale! God is sooo faithful to the WRE program through our generous supporters!! We are so grateful for you! Enjoy the pictures and see you next year!

This past week, I had an opportunity to visit our WRE classes at Pioneer Elementary School. We're preparing to participate in an iniative through School Ministries Indiana and National to highlight our program and other Indiana released-time programs during the month of March. I took some pictures and short videos of the classes, as well as asked students to share with me why they liked coming to WRE on the Wally bus... It was great to hear what they had to share and I wanted you to hear what was on their hearts, as well...

Wow! Are we really heading into a second week of this "tundra" weather?? And yes, we've missed a few WRE classes because of it, so please pray with us that Wally will make it to all the schools this week.

We have an exciting second semester ahead of us!! First of all, we are welcoming 20 new 4th graders in our classes and we're really excited for this. In addition, since our focus in this semester is Jesus' life, ministry, and then His death and resurrection, we decided to provide the students with a little Jesus figurine--ours are about 2" tall And by these smiling faces, the students at Landis really enjoyed receiving them...

Please stay warm and inside as much as you can... God bless!

We're well into January, but I recently realized I missed a couple of our precious students with their candy cane craft that they made in their last WRE class before Christmas! Enjoy!!

From the Board and Staff of WRE, we wish all of you a very Merry Christmas!!

Students have also been working on memorizing several Scriptures--John 3:16 and the verses included in "God's Roadmap to Knowing Jesus" (our version of The Roman's Road). These verses include: Romans 3:23, Romans 6:23, Romans 5:8, Romans 10:9, and Romans 3:22.

Please continue to keep our teachers and students in your prayers as many of these lessons provide opportunities for the students to make commitments to follow Jesus!

As we close out this year, I'm excited to share that we currently have 335 4th grade students attending WRE. We're praying that we'll have a few more join our classes for second semester where our lessons begins with the life of Jesus!
