He could have walked out any day.

John Bunyan was a tinker — a mender of pots and kettles — from the English Midlands who converted to Christianity and became a powerful lay preacher in the Puritan tradition. He preached in barns, in fields, in homes — wherever people would gather to hear him.

In 1660 the English monarchy was restored under Charles II. Laws against Nonconformist preaching were enforced. Bunyan was arrested in November 1660 for preaching without a license from the Church of England.

He was offered release at virtually every point in his imprisonment.

The condition was simple. Promise to stop preaching.

He refused. Every time. For twelve years.

He stayed in Bedford jail — with interruptions for brief periods of release — from 1660 to 1672. He had a wife. He had children. One of his daughters was blind and his accounts of his anguish at leaving her are among the most heartbreaking passages in his autobiography — he describes the separation as pulling flesh from his bones.
He stayed anyway.
He could not promise to be silent. Not because he was stubborn but because he could not separate his identity from the call to preach the Gospel.
In the jail he wrote.
Pilgrim's Progress — the allegorical journey of Christian from the City of Destruction to the Celestial City — was published in 1678 after his final release. It became the second most printed book in history after the Bible. It has been translated into over 200 languages. It has never gone out of print in 350 years.
A tinker. A prison cell. Twelve years of refusing silence.
And the most widely read piece of Christian literature ever written besides Scripture itself.

A father's legacy is rarely measured by wealth, success, or accomplishments. It's measured by the love he gave. The faith he lived. The lessons he taught. And the example he left behind. Long after childhood is over, those gifts continue to shape our lives in ways we often don't fully appreciate until years later. A kind word. A quiet sacrifice. A prayer offered on our behalf. A steady presence through life's changing seasons. These are the things that endure. 🙏

Today, let's thank God for the fathers, grandfathers, and father figures who have helped guide us, encourage us, and point us toward what truly matters. And if you're blessed to still have your dad here, take a moment to tell him what he means to you. The moments we share today often become the memories we treasure tomorrow.
