It’s easy to follow when we’re excited about what God is doing. Faithfulness is proven when the excitement wears off and obedience becomes uncomfortable.

Following Christ will sometimes take us outside our comfort zone. We may have to have a difficult conversation, serve when it’s inconvenient, or take a step of obedience that stretches us. Faithfulness keeps following Christ even when obedience isn’t easy.

“And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.” Luke 9:23

Biblical love is primarily a choice of action, not a feeling. Feelings can be part of love, but Jesus’ command to love one another doesn’t depend on how we feel about someone.

There will be people who frustrate us, disappoint us, or are simply difficult to love. We can still choose to forgive, show patience, or step in when they need help. We don’t have to wait until we feel loving before we act in love. Jesus calls us to choose a course of action toward others that reflects the love He has shown us.

“My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.” 1 John 3:18

Abraham and Lot were both believers, but their choices led to very different walks with God. Lot repeatedly chose his own way, and it cost him the closeness and confidence that Abraham enjoyed. Abraham believed God, followed Him in obedience, and Scripture calls him “the Friend of God.”

Disobedience doesn’t undo your salvation, but it does affect your fellowship with God. Obedience doesn’t earn His friendship; it shows a heart that wants to walk closely with Him. There’s a difference between belonging to God and living in the nearness of a friend.

“Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.” John 15:14

“And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.” James 2:23

SPIRITUAL GROWTH CHECK: What kind of fruit is your life producing?

God’s Word reveals the difference between the works of the flesh and the fruit of the Spirit.

“Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like… But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance.” Galatians 5:19–23

Take time to examine your attitudes, words, choices, and responses in light of God's Word. Are you yielding to the Spirit, or allowing your flesh to control your life?

Ask God to reveal what is truly in your heart, and be willing to confess and correct whatever does not agree with His Word.

“Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts.” Psalm 139:23

You can know a lot about Jesus and still neglect your daily walk with Him. We can know the right answers, hear the preaching, and understand what Jesus taught without actually abiding in Him.

Fruit comes from abiding. If we want Christ to produce fruit in our lives, we have to stay connected to Him through His Word, prayer, and obedience. Knowing about the Vine will never take the place of abiding in the Vine.

“As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.” Colossians 2:6–7

Salvation is a decision each person must make for themselves. You don’t receive it by cleaning up your life, doing enough good, or becoming religious. Jesus died for your sins and rose again, and He offers salvation freely to anyone who will call upon Him by faith.

“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Romans 10:13

“Whosoever” means the invitation includes you. If you have never trusted Christ as your Savior, you can settle that today.

The friendship between Jonathan and David cost Jonathan something. He knew David would one day have the throne that could have been his, yet he chose to give rather than hold tightly to his own position. That gives us a much more concrete picture of what it means to put someone else before ourselves. Jesus went further—He willingly humbled Himself and gave His life for us. Biblical love isn’t measured by what we get from someone, but by what we’re willing to give for their good.
