Maitland Church of the Brethren

Maitland Church of the Brethren A Bible-based community church... "Drawing Souls to Christ." Pastor Rev. Jeannine Leister Welcome to Maitland Church of the Brethren! Simply.

From an active youth group, to weekday Bible studies, to a growing children’s program, there is something for everyone at Maitland COB. A traditional worship style leads our members to grow in faith and fellowship together as we seek to follow God and serve our fellow man. Grounded in the Church of the Brethren beliefs, we strive to “Continue the work of Jesus... Peacefully. Together.” Our church

offers an annual candlelight Christmas Eve Service, with musical selections from our bell choir, and an Easter Sunrise Service, complete with breakfast. Working through the Middle PA District of the Church of the Brethren, we send campers to Camp Blue Diamond and support district ministries. We extend a warm welcome to everyone.

What if I told you the first sacrifice in the Bible wasn’t at the altar… but in Eden?

After Adam and Eve sinned, their first instinct was to hide. They tried to cover their shame with fig leaves—a picture of humanity trying to fix sin with human effort. But their covering was never enough.

Then Genesis tells us something powerful:

“The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.” — Genesis 3:21

An innocent life was taken so their shame could be covered.

The Bible never says what animal it was, but the message is clear: sin brings death, and covering requires sacrifice.

This moment becomes the first foreshadowing of the Gospel.
Before there was the tabernacle, the Law, or the sacrifices of Israel… there was Eden.

And even there, God was already revealing His plan of redemption.

Fig leaves represented human effort.
The skins represented God’s provision.

Humanity says, “I can cover myself.”
God says, “Only I can truly cover you.”

Thousands of years later, that picture would point to Jesus Christ—the innocent One who would die so sinners could be clothed, not with animal skins, but with righteousness and grace.

The cross was not God’s backup plan.
The story of redemption was being whispered from the very beginning.

Even in Eden…
the shadow of the cross was already there. 🤍🙏🏻
