“Transcendental” might sound like a complicated theological term, but it points to something deeply human: how creation reveals something greater than itself.

The Catholic tradition helps us recognize these qualities throughout creation and ultimately in God Himself:

Truth: what is real
Goodness: what fulfills its purpose
Beauty: what reveals radiance and meaning
Unity: what draws things into wholeness

All four point beyond themselves to God.

And because you were created in His image, these aren’t just ideas to study. They help us understand something about how we were created to know God, love others, and become who He calls us to be.

That’s where the Transcendental Types begin!

Which one do you find yourself most naturally drawn to: Truth, Beauty, Unity, or Goodness?

We started a blog! 🌿

And for our very first post, we’re beginning with the Season of Creation.

From September 1 through October 4, Christians are invited to give thanks for God’s creation, care for what He has entrusted to us, and allow the created world to turn our attention back toward its Creator.

But here’s the question we couldn’t resist asking:

What does your Transcendental Type notice in creation?

🌿 Truth may want to understand.
🌿 Goodness may notice what needs to be cared for.
🌿 Beauty may be drawn into wonder.
🌿 Unity may want to share the experience with someone.

Same creation. Different first movements of attention.

And all of them can lead us back to Christ.

"Only love creates."

At Auschwitz, St. Maximilian Kolbe steped forward to take the place of a fellow prisoner who had been condemned to death. His strength became and act of self-gift, protecting another person at the cost of his own life.

Kolbe knows the heart of the Goodness 3 Defender at it's best: courageous, protective, and willing to sacrifice for the good of another.

His life reminds us that truth strength is strongest when it becomes love.

Truth. Beauty. Unity. Goodness.

We recognize them because we were made for them.

For centuries, the saints and great thinkers of the Church have helped us understand these transcendentals as qualities that ultimately lead us back to God.

Truth draws the mind toward Him.
Beauty awakens the soul to wonder.
Unity draws the heart into communion.
Goodness moves the will toward Him.

And because we are made in His image, each of us may find that one of these speaks particularly to the way we encounter God and reflect Him to the world.

When soldiers came to attack Assisi, St. Clare carried the Blessed Sacrament to the convent wall and prayed. The attackers withdrew. Her steadfast faith and desire to protect her community beautifully reflect the Unity 3: steady, faithful, and strong in service of those entrusted to their care.

St. Clare, pray for us!
