Winter Nights 2022:

First Hammer Hallowing.

Today we celebrate Winter Nights. We will honor Freya and our Disir. The veil thins this time of year bringing us closer to those ever present guardians of our family lines.

The transition has come, cold and dark prevail. The Wild Hunt is coming. But all is not grim, for even though everything outside becomes harsh and unfriendly, it is time to surround ourselves with the warmth and love of family.

While the earth sleeps under a wintry blanket we gather at our hearth and continue to strengthen our bonds. Take comfort, and let it carry you through until Spring once again arrives to slough off winter’s bitter chill.

Freya, shining lady of the Vanir, daughter of Njord, wife of Odr, mistress of Seidr, wearer of Brisingamen, battle maiden who chooses half of the slain to dwell in Sessrumnir. We honor you goddess of strength, love and beauty. May you temper our cold winter nights with the warmth of love.

Disir! Those that watch, guide, and protect. We honor you, and may we continue to honor you by our actions. As the Havamal says:

“Cattle die, kinsmen die, the self must also die; I know one thing that never dies, the reputation of each dead man.”

For now we hold them in our hearts. May we hold them in our arms when our time in Midgard ends.
