This past weekend, parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Las Vegas were asked to read a letter from Archbishop George Leo Thomas, Ph.D., regarding Question 6.

The Archbishop urges Catholics to become informed, prayerfully consider the serious concerns surrounding the measure, and vote NO on Question 6.

Saint Francis: after a dissolute youth he was converted at Assisi in Umbria and embraced an evangelical life, becoming poor himself to serve Jesus Christ, whom he found most of all in the poor and abandoned. He gathered the Friars Minor around him and preached the love of God to everyone, as he traveled even as far as the Holy Land. He aspired to the perfect following of Christ in word and deed, and wished to die upon the bare earth.

A Saint in Sin City????

In the 1970s, Venerable Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen visited Las Vegas, bringing to Las Vegas the same unmistakable presence, wit and powerful preaching that had already reached millions through radio and television.

This week, the Catholic Church celebrates a historic moment in his remarkable story.

On Thursday, Sept. 24, Archbishop Sheen will be beatified during a Mass in St. Louis, formally receiving the title “Blessed.”

Nearly half a century later, his words still resonate: a life centered on Christ, the Eucharist and the call to holiness.
