In Memoriam Florence Venetta Hamilton
Florence passed away on September 4th of this year. She had reached the venerable age of 104.
Yet even as she celebrated her 100th birthday back in 2022 & was honored at a community gathering in her honor, she continued to take her storytelling seat at our meetings. Florence ever had a twinkle in her eye & a story to tell. She was a master at drawing her audience in & even when her voice grew low as her account unfolded, she held the attention of her rapt audience. Her very presence took the listener on a journey into the heart of a tale, or into the life of an historical figure.
A lifelong member of the NAACP, serving for a time as Secretary of the local chapter, Florence had an interest in highlighting the lives of the often overlooked African American women, who were the pioneers of their time, activists in their field of endeavor, paving the way for others to follow.
Florence told stories to young & old, from seniors in retirement communities & nursing homes, to children at Coas Books & the Boys & Girls club.
There are so many facets to Florence's life, storytelling was a mainstay, but as other community members can attest, she contributed to & was engaged in many & varied endeavors.
A Celebration of Life for Florence will take place on Saturday, October 10th at 2:00 pm at the First Presbyterian Church (200 E Boutz). There will be a reception to follow.
