WHO NEEDS CHAPLAINS?

After many years as a pastor and leading BBM, the Lord led me into chaplaincy ministries. In addition to my ministry with BBM I currently serve with Marketplace Chaplains and in a hospice ministry. Both ministries emphasize a ministry of presence. Simply put, the chaplain is a person who is there when you need him or simply want someone to be there.

As shepherds of God’s flock, we must reckon that our sheep come to church tired and broken. They might not admit it or show it, but the world has left them beleaguered. Marriages are on the brink, parents feel helpless, work is joyless, finances are drying up, loneliness abounds, persecution is growing – and to top it all off, “the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8). That’s the reality (albeit veiled) when your church gathers for worship and fellowship.

Neither the church nor its shepherds always know how to handle or resolve such conflicts when they arise. The mishandling of conflicts or not providing proper Biblical conflict resolution can worsen the problem. It may draw others into the conflict. We may mishandle conflicts by choosing to ignore them, denying they exist, or minimizing the severity of the conflict.

We're starting a new sermon series on 2 Samuel at SJBC!

The book of 2 Samuel tells the story of David—Israel’s greatest king, a man after God’s own heart, and a shadow of the greater King to come. Through his victories, failures, and restoration, we see how God works through flawed people to accomplish his perfect purposes.

We’re beginning with “When God Raises Up a Man” (2Sam. 1-4), where the kingdom of Israel stands in the ruins of Saul’s collapse. While power lies within reach, David waits on the Lord. Through grief, loyalty, and conflict, God quietly shapes the heart of his chosen king.
