Conflict is part of being human—even within the church. A careless word, a misunderstanding, or an action that causes hurt can leave a relationship strained. But what happens next? Do we avoid one another? Hold on to our hurt? Or is there another way?

In Matthew 18:15-20, Jesus offers some surprisingly practical—and perhaps challenging—guidance for dealing with conflict among his followers. This week, Pastor Nancy invites us to consider what Jesus' words might teach us about moving from hurt toward healing and restoring relationships.

Today we explore Matthew 16:21–28 as we consider the S.N.O.E. that can arise within us when Jesus calls us to deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow him. What might Jesus be asking of us—and how will we respond?

SNOE? In late August? Not quite "snow"—but perhaps something just as unexpected!

Lancaster COB to Host 6th International Fun Day on August 29

Lancaster Church of the Brethren (LCOB) will host its sixth annual International Fun Day on Saturday, August 29, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the church grounds. The church is located at 1601 Sunset Ave., Lancaster. (Activities will move indoors if it rains.)

Representatives of about 20 countries will set up table displays with information, activities, artwork, and food representing their country. Anyone can learn and sample foods, while children will receive a passport to be stickered at each “country” they visit. When their passport is filled, they will receive a small prize.

Tables are confirmed for these countries or regions: Australia, China, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, England, France, Germany, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Ireland, Italy, Nigeria, Panama, Puerto Rico, Scotland, South Sudan, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, and the 574 Tribal Nations of the United States. More countries are being finalized.

Signs will acknowledge parts of the world that are plagued by violence and encourage prayers for peace.

Dancers from the Paloma School of Irish Dance will start the day with a performance at 10:00 a.m. A South Sudanese-American Choir will perform. The United States will be represented by a free hot dog lunch. Other attractions include face painting.

"Who do YOU say Jesus is?" In her sermon Becky Fuchs challenges us to think about that question on a deeper level and fine tune our understanding of the essence of the Jesus we profess to follow.

Jerry Brown and Pastor Nancy Hess lead worship. Violinist Nonie Detrick, accompanied by Greg Bachmann, provide instrumental music. There is a prayer and blessing for students, teachers, and all who are part of our school communities.

In Matthew 15:21-28, there is a strange little story about an encounter Jesus and his disciples had with a rather hopeless Canaanite woman who had a mentally ill daughter. Ultimately, this outcast and desperate woman found her hope in Jesus. Where do you find your hope in desperate times? Pastor Ron Bohannon leads in considering this faith question.
