REVOLUTIONARY TEXTS LECTURE SERIES
SAINT JAMES CHURCH
AT THE CORNER OF DUKE AND ORANGE STREETS
DOWNTOWN HISTORIC LANCASTER, PENNSYLVANIA

June 14, 11:30 AM (After the 10:30 AM Mass)

Parish Historian Dr. Cordelia Moyse will explore the impact of the Declaration of Independence on Saint James. Father David will focus on the specifically religious language at the heart of the Declaration.

ABOUT THE SERIES:
Many texts containing “revolutionary ideas” have shaped American history and identity, not just one. Our Christian calling as citizens of this great country is to help Rejoice, Repair and Renew our national life. In a special Sunday Brunch Lectures series in honor of the 250th anniversary of our nation’s founding, thought-leading social historians and theologians will reflect on a range of radical texts that challenge, expand or declare unfulfilled the rights and aspirations set forth in the Declaration of Independence.

Registration is required for catering, with a suggested donation of $25 for adults.

CHURCHYARD RENEWAL PROJECT BEGINS

The Memorial Day tradition began with tending the graves of Civil War family and community members. As we give thanks this weekend for those whose service in the cause of others' freedom is buried in our churchyard, we see the first elements of the churchyard renewal project taking shape.

Using native plants, we are replanting an area of the children’s garden and “meadowing” one of the areas where we regularly inter ashes to create a more ecologically diverse and environmentally engaging historic churchyard. It will take three growing seasons for the planting to complete the "sleep, creep and then leap” plant growth cycles needed to provide the fullness of ground cover, which is the design.

STOP BY THE CHURCHYARD AND EXPERIENCE THE MEADOWING PROCESS!

What a beautiful day of fellowship, learning, and adventure at our Intergenerational Hike this Saturday! Thank you to the Mission & Justice Committee for sponsoring such a wonderful gathering.

Together, we learned so much about native species and our agricultural practices past and present, enjoyed delicious food and conversation, and even caught tadpoles along the way! We are so grateful for the opportunity to spend time together in creation and community.

***SAINT JAMES BAKERS OF HISTORY***
***MAY 31 DESSERT SAMPLING AT OUR PARISH POTLUCK CELEBRATION***

Ever wonder what baking was like in colonial times? Here at Saint James, we have a brave crew of artisan bakers who took on the challenge of recreating some of the desserts from Mary Ross's cookbook. She was the great-granddaughter of George Ross, a signer of the Declaration of Independence.

Imagine cooking with lard, rose water and various other ingredients not available at your local grocery store. Our team of "history bakers" experimented with substitute ingredients and baking pans, such as glass, metal and cast iron, not to mention a conventional oven versus a cast iron stove oven.

WONDERING WHAT BOILED LARD, CORN PUDDING AND POTATO PIE TASTE LIKE?
Join us on May 31st at 11:30 for our Parish Potluck Celebration in our Parish House Forum room, 119 North Duke Street. There will be several colonial baked goods available for sampling.

***SAINT JAMES PARISH HOUSE***
***119 NORTH DUKE STREET***
**MAY 31 | 11:30 AM***

Join us for a grand celebration of our parish's history! There will be fun activities for all ages, including a scavenger hunt and appearances by historic Saint James parishioners.

We will also have several baked goods available for sampling from the cookbook of Mary Ross, the great-granddaughter of George Ross, a signer of the DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE. Mary must have enjoyed potluck dinners, as last year, one of her descendants gifted Mary's recipe book to Saint James. It includes not only her family recipes from the colonial era but also those she collected from other parishioners.

Registration is kindly requested. Click this link to let us know you'll be attending:

Today, the crew from John Garvey Masonry worked on the Duke Street steps. They checked for loose or damaged stones, cleaned out old caulk, and prepared for the installation of new stone, fresh caulk, and repointing. Thank you to Matt Henry and our Buildings and Grounds Committee for their dedication to maintaining our historic campus in excellent condition!
