Memorial Day began after the Civil War as “Decoration Day,” when grieving families and communities gathered to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers and remembrance. It was never about mattress sales, lake days, or a staycation. It was about stopping to remember and honor.
As Christians, remembrance should matter deeply to us. Scripture repeatedly calls the people of God to remember what others sacrificed, remember God’s faithfulness, and teach the next generation why those things matter.
🚨 That’s why church matters…even this weekend. 🚨
It’s not because we worship a country. We certainly do not. But rather because gratitude, honor, remembrance, and prayer should still exist in the hearts of God’s people. When the church forgets, the country forgets.
Sadly and sinfully, many people across the nation will skip church this weekend for a three-day getaway. This not only neglects the intention of a national holiday, it grieves the heart of God.
This Sunday at Honor Church, we’ll gather to worship Jesus, honor sacrifice, pray for families who carry loss, and remember that freedom has always been costly.
