Christ Community Church of Laguna Hills Our highest aim is to exalt the living God in worship and in the faithful proclamation of His truth. People need Christ!

So you will find the Bible, God’s Word, to be the central focus of all of our ministries, studies, and programs. We desire, as a family of believers, to be always growing in the grace and truth of the Lord Jesus Christ. Sound doctrine (teaching) marks our faith community. Always striving to be anchored in God’s Word, we seek to be a church where right doctrine translates into right living. We don’t want to be “hearers only” of the Word – we want to be transformed by its power! We want Christ’s life to be lived through us – changing our hearts, minds, and relationships in unmistakable ways. Gospel centeredness drives our message. The world doesn’t need any more “self help” or manmade rules and regulations wrapped in religious language. As a church that belongs to Christ, our central message is Him. Jesus Christ lived the perfect life that every one of us – because of our sinful rebellion – failed to live. And Jesus died on the cross at Calvary the death that every one of us deserved. His resurrection from the dead is the foundation of our only real hope … and we have discovered that the hope that is ours in Christ is our greatest treasure. “In Him!” is the core of what we preach and who we are. Classic evangelicalism is our history and our identity. We are unashamedly a people of the Bible. We uphold the truths that are distinctively Protestant and Reformational. At the same time, we recognize that we – as sinners saved by grace – must be a gracious people. We strive to be warm and hospitable, welcoming all who come our way in Christ’s name. We seek to be humble to the core, knowing that only the Spirit of Christ can empower us to truly serve as His ambassadors in a way that honors Him and hides us. Joyful worship is our way of life! In song and beautiful music … in historic creeds and testimonies by new believers … in unshakeable conviction and loving hospitality … we seek to make Christ known in the way we honor Him in praise, adoration, and thanksgiving. Sunday morning worship is the highlight of our week, and we invite you to join us as we exalt the Lord together. You know people like this. Passionate about Jesus. Stoked with their faith. And then somewhere, somehow, they drifted away. Maybe disillusioned. Maybe drawn away by the world's pleasures. Maybe suffering hit and they couldn't reconcile it.

The question lingers: could that happen to me? Will I be faithful to Jesus in five years? In ten?

The answer isn't about grinding harder or trying with more conviction. It's about understanding what actually holds you. God doesn't just save you once. He secures you. And He holds you through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed.

Faith that stands without sight is not a lesser faith. It is exactly the faith Peter describes. Love and trust and rejoicing directed toward a risen Christ who is unseen but not absent, unknown by face but known by grace.

Most of us know how to begin the Christian life. Fewer of us think seriously about finishing it. And if you've walked with the Lord for any length of time, you've watched someone drift. Someone who was passionate, present, and then, quietly, gone. That weight is real, and Peter felt it too.

Writing to believers whose faith was being tested and whose lives were genuinely hard, Peter didn't minimize the pressure they were under. He called them to endure, to persevere, to hold fast to Christ. And he grounded that call in something more solid than willpower or resolve. God not only grants salvation. He completes it.

So the question worth sitting with this week is an honest one: Am I doing today what I need to do to remain faithful tomorrow?

God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil. And God was sorry he had made man. That's not poetry. That's the diagnosis.

But here's what the gospel tells us that Damocles could have never imagined: the sword of divine judgment that our sin deserves fell upon Christ. Not on us. The consequence we earned, Jesus bore. The death we deserve, he died. The judgment we fear, he faced. That's grace. That's the gospel.

We think justice means treating everyone fairly. But that idea would've sounded absurd to the ancient world, survival of the fittest, the strong rule, the weak serve. So where did this radical notion come from? The Bible. Christianity reshaped how we see justice itself, so completely that we can't even imagine thinking any other way.

Our entire moral framework, the things we hold to be self-evident, are rooted in Scripture we may not even claim to believe. The gospel doesn't just save us. It reorders reality. It tells us the strong are called to protect the weak, that the last are first, that Christ himself became weak so that we might inherit true justice. That's not natural order. That's grace.

Genesis 6:5 doesn't read like a verse you'd put on a coffee mug. It's blunt, heavy, and uncomfortably accurate. "Every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually." That's the condition God looked down at before He acted in Noah's day. And if we're honest, it's not so different from what He sees in us.

But here's where the passage refuses to stay dark. The God who sees clearly, who has no illusions about human corruption, is the same God who moves toward His people in grace. Judgment is what the moment deserved. Grace is what God gave. That tension isn't a contradiction. It's the heartbeat of the gospel.

Grace comes first. The walking comes second.

That's the pattern all through Scripture. God grants His precious promises to us, not because we've earned them, but because He's given them freely. Then, from that grace, we're able to walk with Him. Noah didn't earn God's favor and then find safety from judgment. He received God's grace first, and then he walked. Enoch didn't become worthy of God's presence through his own effort. He was given favor, and from that gift, he walked with God.

The sword of divine judgment that our sin deserves fell on Christ. Not on us. That's the gospel. That's grace that breaks the pattern of human striving. You're not earning your way to God. You never will. But the good news is you don't have to. God has already moved toward you in Jesus.

But whether you have a journaling Bible with space for notes or a simple notebook, both can be valuable tools for engaging with God’s Word and preparing your heart for Sunday.

As we walk through Genesis together, use those pages to ask questions, trace the unfolding story, and connect what you’re learning from week to week. Read the passage before Sunday, bring your notes to the sermon, and return to them afterward.

Careful study serves a greater purpose: knowing the God who reveals himself in Scripture and learning to trust and obey him.

Can I trust what God says? Can I trust that he is good?

In Genesis 3, these questions lie at the heart of temptation. Doubting God’s word leads us to question his character. Questioning his goodness makes his commands seem like barriers to the life we want.

We know that struggle, too. But Jesus meets our distrust with grace. His cross assures us of the love we are tempted to doubt—and gives us reason to trust God’s word, even when obedience is costly.

Beneath every temptation is a question about God’s goodness: Can I trust him to give me what I truly need?

Sin persuades us that life will be better if we take matters into our own hands. The promise feels urgent; the cost feels distant. But Genesis 3 reveals sin’s corrosive effects: trust gives way to fear, intimacy to shame, and fellowship to blame. What promises satisfaction brings brokenness that reaches far beyond the moment.

Yet God meets his rebellious people with a promise. The woman’s offspring will crush the serpent’s head. Even as God pronounces judgment, he announces that evil will not have the final word.

That promise leads us to Jesus, who bears sin’s consequences at the cross and conquers death through his resurrection. The God whose goodness we doubted gives himself to bring us home.
