The cross was an instrument of Roman terror. People carried crosses because the empire had condemned them. A person carrying a cross had completely lost control of the destination. Jesus tell his followers that disciples or discipleship requires a surrender of control. Following him means releasing our demand to determine the route, the conditions, and the cost.

Pull up the stakes, pick up the cross and follow Jesus. We do not walk toward an unknown future alone. Jesus already knows the road, he knows the cost, he knows what lies beyond the places where fear tells us to remain.
