Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Lafayette We are a welcoming spiritual community with diverse beliefs, but a common set of values. At this time we are meeting IN PERSON AND VIA ZOOM at 10:30 a.m.

Sundays for fellowship, with morning service beginning at 11:00 a.m. You'll find our church building located next to the Gypsy Market and Domino's, on the corner of Johnston St. and University Ave.

Our communities come together in this time that holds elements of profound beauty and celebration - of joyful homecoming and new beginnings - alongside much that causes worry and understandable fear. It continues to be a painful time, with too many losses, and a level of violence that is sometimes too terrible to bear.

And I know to my bones that times like these are why we need religious community in the first place. We need a touchpoint, to live into the fullness of who and how we most want to be together in the face of all that is tender and impactful. And we can learn from one another, from each congregation’s unique history and context, and from the lifesaving ministries each of you offer in your communities.

We will face the unknown together, prepare for what may come, and support one another in staying accountable to the values we hold in common covenant. And in doing so, we will find the joy and the strength to meet this moment, together in community.

The flaming chalice has important historic significance as a signal of safer spaces and assistance on the path to freedom; and for me, it is also a fiery reminder of the commitments of this faith.

Unitarian Universalism challenges me to make use of my own freedom, my own privilege, my own values and reason to understand that what I might risk on any given day is just my one small part in the possibility of human goodness and liberation that we preach and teach about in troubled times. These commitments invite every one of us to risk what we think we know about the power of love in the world for greater freedoms, greater justice... for nothing less than liberation for all.

As we explore what it means to hold love at the center of our faith, how might we bring hope home in times like these? Can we offer some aspect of our own spirits to others to help them keep going; to respond to rising hatred with mutual care?

As we come together in this freely chosen faith centered on love, let us hold fast to a spirit that never leaves us, and offer to one another and to our surrounding communities the kind of love that frees.

We take in stories each day – headlines, ideologies, campaign tactics, politics, and stump speeches – attempting to convince us that human goodness is impossible. It would be understandable to adopt this lens as our own in this chaotic time, if it were not for the way we as Unitarian Universalists live with one another in community.

When we affirm in our congregations and communities that humanity is inherently worthy and met in that highest value by all of creation, when we give of our time and our resources to strengthen the work of partnership and faithful witness, we are refuting the stories of the day and renewing the very wholeness and possibility of our tradition.

Nicole Pressley, the UUA’s Organizing Strategy Team director, insists that for democracy to work, we need one another and therefore, we must care for each other. All of the work of Side With Love is an investment in democracy and the collective power of community. It is all about the promise, the process, and the people.

Our labor on behalf of climate justice is an investment in democracy. Our work for abolition is an investment in democracy. Our insistence on bodily autonomy through reproductive justice, LGBTQ and gender justice, and disability rights is an investment in democracy. Organizing against criminalization as racial justice and immigration justice is an investment in democracy.

Our showing up for electoral justice, especially in this election season, is an investment in each other and through this, an investment in democracy. The promise of democracy lives in the collective whole and it is made manifest through our actions and our care for one another.
