GOD EQUIPS US THROUGH DIFFICULTY

“Therefore, I will most gladly boast all the more about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may reside in me. So I take pleasure in weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and in difficulties, for the sake of Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong. ”
‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭12‬:‭9‬b-‭10‬

▪️Dependence on God’s power in our weakness is what makes us strong. The source of our strength is Him, not anything in ourselves.
▪️Weaknesses, insults, persecutions, and difficulties all create space for God’s power to operate.
▪️During difficulty, God doesn’t always help us to escape but to endure. And in this endurance, we get to witness God’s mighty power at work.

GOD PROVIDES POWER IN WEAKNESS

“But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is perfected in weakness.”
‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭12‬:‭9‬a

▪️God gives us the exact help that we need, even if it’s not the end of the suffering.
▪️Christ’s power becomes more visible as it works through our weaknesses.
▪️God’s grace is the power that sustains us throughout our lives.

always remove our suffering, even
after we’ve requested it repeatedly?

GOD ALLOWS CHALLENGES FOR HUMILITY

“Therefore, so that I would not exalt myself, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to torment me so that I would not exalt myself. Concerning this, I pleaded with the Lord three times that it would leave me.”
‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭12‬:‭7‬-b-8‬ ‭CSB‬‬

▪️Even the apostle Paul faced suffering
and challenges.
▪️Paul acknowledged that God allowed his suffering to keep him from becoming proud and arrogant.
▪️Sometimes God allows difficulty and suffering in our lives to protect us from spiritual failures.

❓What does the “thorn in the flesh”
tell us about how Paul was feeling?
❓What was this “thorn”
protecting him from?
❓What’s the difference between a
challenge God allows to humble
you versus a negative consequence
that comes from your own
bad choices?

We all have weaknesses. Some of them are very evident and even public. Some we manage to keep private. We often become frustrated with our weaknesses, but Paul shows us that it is in our weakness that God’s strength shines. God uses our weakness and difficulty as an opportunity to display His power.

God’s power is clearly seen in His creation, so humanity has no excuse to suppress the truth of God’s existence and His power and work as the Creator.

CREATION REVEALS THE CREATOR

“since what can be known about God is evident among them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, that is, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen since the creation of the world, being understood through what he has made.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭1‬:‭19‬-‭20‬a

▪️When we look at what God has made, His divine nature and power are evident.
▪️From the smallest particle to the largest galaxy, God’s power is on display.
▪️This evidence is available to everyone.

OUR SIN HIDES THE TRUTH

“For God’s wrath is revealed from heaven against all godlessness and unrighteousness of people who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth, ”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭1‬:‭18‬ ‭CSB‬‬

▪️God cannot and does not ignore sin.
▪️His anger here is directed at people who actively ignore the truth and hide knowledge of God.
▪️Our greatest sin is the willful choice to reject the obvious evidence of a Creator.

❓Why is it reasonable for God to be
angry if people are actively hiding
the truth He has made clear?

someone who doesn’t know God
and someone who “suppresses the
truth” about God?
