This powerful exploration of Nicodemus's journey challenges us to examine what we're truly willing to sacrifice for our faith. We follow Nicodemus from his secretive nighttime encounter with Jesus, through his tentative defense of Christ before the Sanhedrin, to his bold declaration at the cross. The transformation is striking: a man who once hid his curiosity becomes willing to lose everything he worked his entire life to achieve. The central message cuts deep: when truth costs us our circles, we must choose the cross over the crowd. We're confronted with Jesus's radical teaching that being born again means starting over completely, that our own righteousness and adherence to rules will never be enough. The metaphor of darkness and light becomes personal when we realize Nicodemus came to Jesus under cover of night, and Jesus essentially asked him: will you stay in darkness or step into the light? This same question echoes for us today. Are we willing to follow truth even when it contradicts our social circles, our upbringing, our carefully constructed identities? The sobering reality is that Satan attacks where it hurts most, threatening what we value when we move toward the light. Yet Nicodemus shows us that costly devotion leads to authentic faith.

Jesus routinely ate and socialized with people society deemed unworthy. He chose to love them first and it was being in proximity and relationship to Him that changed their lives. What are we doing to emulate this in our own lives and in the lives of the people we encounter?

This powerful message confronts us with a challenging truth: the greatest barrier to experiencing God's grace often isn't our obvious sins, but our hidden pride. Through the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector in Luke 18, we discover two radically different approaches to God. The Pharisee, doing everything right externally, trusts in his own righteousness and compares himself favorably to others. The tax collector, aware of his brokenness, can barely lift his eyes to heaven as he cries out for mercy. Surprisingly, Jesus tells us the humble sinner went home justified. This theme continues through two contrasting encounters with Jesus: the rich young ruler who walks away sad because his pride prevents him from surrendering everything, and Zacchaeus, the despised tax collector who joyfully gives away his wealth and makes restitution. The difference? Humility versus pride. We're challenged to examine where we might be lying to ourselves, justifying our actions while trusting in our own righteousness rather than God's grace. The invitation is clear: identify one area where we typically justify ourselves, confess it to God, and share it with a trusted person. This act of vulnerability builds humility within us, opening the door to the honor that comes from truly knowing our need for Jesus.
