This powerful exploration of Nicodemus's journey challenges us to examine what we're truly willing to sacrifice for our faith. We follow Nicodemus from his secretive nighttime encounter with Jesus, through his tentative defense of Christ before the Sanhedrin, to his bold declaration at the cross. The transformation is striking: a man who once hid his curiosity becomes willing to lose everything he worked his entire life to achieve. The central message cuts deep: when truth costs us our circles, we must choose the cross over the crowd. We're confronted with Jesus's radical teaching that being born again means starting over completely, that our own righteousness and adherence to rules will never be enough. The metaphor of darkness and light becomes personal when we realize Nicodemus came to Jesus under cover of night, and Jesus essentially asked him: will you stay in darkness or step into the light? This same question echoes for us today. Are we willing to follow truth even when it contradicts our social circles, our upbringing, our carefully constructed identities? The sobering reality is that Satan attacks where it hurts most, threatening what we value when we move toward the light. Yet Nicodemus shows us that costly devotion leads to authentic faith.
