Cooking For a Cause - free meals for Knoxville - Everyone is welcome
We started out as a small group of women cooking meals for the homebound of the Methodist Church here in Knoxville Iowa. As the economic times changed, we began to dream about doing something more for our community. Where anyone could come and eat for free even if you didn’t belong to our church. We dreamed of a day where there would be a free meal each week in Knoxville Iowa. Where anyone could come for a good meal and conversation without anything asked in return. Where kindness and loving our neighbor would draw this community together, no matter your financial circumstances, regardless of your family size, regardless of your social standing.
Since the start we have gone from 30 meals to 229 meals a night. We have gone from one Wednesday a month to two Wednesday’s a month. We have gone from 5-6 women from our own church serving to men and women and children from several churches and groups in our community serving. In the third year we added a pop-up-pantry that is included on the First Wednesday. Individuals and families can shop for fresh and frozen food items that are not shelf stable, we stock shelf stable foods in our blessing boxes out in front of the church, but we wanted to be able to offer fresh and frozen meats and eggs, milk and meals in a refrigerator and freezer.
We welcomed the following churches and groups for serving and preparing meals.
Presbyterian Church
Seven Day Adventist Church
Saint Anthony Catholic Church
Good Shepherd Lutheran Church
Celebrate Church, Speeders group
Peter, Paul, & Pickleball
KHS class of 1973
staff at KFUMC
KFUMC pathfinders and Youth groups
Freedom For Youth Group
Zion and Attica Methodist Churches, (These lovely ladies make the cookies we serve)
KFUMC F.U.N. Group.
You may ask how we pay for this? We accept donations. We have applied for and receive grants. We support local businesses by shopping at all the grocery stores for fresh nutritious foods. Fareway, Hy-Vee, Dollar General, Northcote Meats and Deli, Walmart.
We received a grant from Weiler's Manufacturing and purchased a frig/freezer for the Pop-Up-Pantry, so we can have fresh and frozen meats, vegetables and meals. We received the Carma Mohler grant from Iowa United Methodist Foundation, and with that grant we bought a freezer for meat and frozen food donations. We received a grant from the Marion County Foundation which we used to buy food for the Monthly meals.
If you would like to donate or serve in our community, please reach out to Deb Greiner at [email protected]
If you love our community and have a servant heart, please reach out.
This is a wonderful thing in our community, 3 out of 4 weeks you can find a free meal and take home a meal for later.
Here is where you can find Free meals in the Knoxville Iowa
Methodist church on the first Wednesday of each month- 313 E Montgomery St
Riverside Church on the second Tuesday of each month – 120 W Main St
Methodist Church on the last Wednesday of each month -313 E Montgomery St

It would be amazing if each week, somewhere in Knoxville, there was a free meal!
We can make that happen with your help!
Please share!
