It’s the middle of the night.

You wake to the sound of someone breaking into your home.

Your family is inside. You don't know who has entered, what they intend to do, or how far they're willing to go.

As a Christian, what are you allowed to do?

Jesus tells us to love our enemies. To turn the other cheek. To reject vengeance.

But in Luke 22, He also tells His disciples, “If you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one.”

So how do we understand those words—and what do they mean when protecting ourselves or the people we love may require force?
