Josiah Winborn became the first pastor of the 38 member congregation. Their numbers grew, and in 1885 the original log sanctuary was rep
laced by a frame building. In 1948 during the ministry of Rev. Bostick an ambitious building program was launched. The old church was demolished and the parsonage was sold to a church member who had it moved. During this period, the church held its worship services and Sunday School program in the Buckhorn Elementary School across the highway. Plans for a new edifice were approved and construction began on the new church of Modified Tudor Gothic architecture. The structure is of sandstone, which was quarried in Wake County. The sanctuary interior trim is dark oak and seats three hundred. The windows are stained- glass, each containing a religious symbol. The church was completed, paid for in full, and dedicated September 30, 1951. In 1954, the Goldsboro District of the Methodist Church was created, and Buckhorn became one of its charter members. In 1968, the Methodist Church merged with the Evangelical United Brethren Church. The Buckhorn congregation
was proud to be a part of this ecumenical movement. Under this new title, Buckhorn United Methodist Church has continued to meet the physical and spiritual needs of the community it serves. The Kenly and Buckhorn churches form a two point charge. The minister serving the two congregations resides in the Kenly church parsonage. A fellowship building constructed of stone to match the Buckhorn Church building was completed in 1993. The congregation has been supportive in meeting each need as it has arisen. Families of our community have met and worshiped at this church for generations, always with open hearts to welcome new members. The church continues to live and grow in its ever broadening programs and patiently awaits the return of its true founder, the Lord Jesus Christ.
