A brief history of St. Christopher’s

met in Classroom 8 of Kailua Elementary School for worship. William Arthur Roberts, Vicar of St. John’s-by-the-Sea Mission in Kahaluu, presided. Christopher’s itself was dedicated as a mission on November 18, 1945. Christopher’s became the first Episcopal parish on Oahu’s Windward side. John’s-by-the-Sea, Kahaluu, helped found St. Christopher’s and, in like manner, St. Christopher’s helped to establish St. Matthew’s in Waimanalo, Calvary in Kaneohe and Emmanuel in Enchanted Lake. Over the years, St. Christopher’s has established itself as a church of long standing service to the community. We began a ministry at the Hawaii State Hospital about forty-five years ago and continue to offer a worship service and dinner for patients each Christmas. Our sixth priest, Father Claude DuTeil, founded the Institute of Human Services (also known as the “Peanut Butter Ministry”). We have also been active in many community ministries, including the Windward Senior Daycare Center, the Kalihi-Palama Immigrant Service Center, Habitat for Humanity, the Windward Spouse Abuse Shelter, and Family Promise. Members of several service organizations and fellowship groups continue to meet at our Church.
