PART 2: WHY HYMNS? | HABITS & HYMNS
Why are we teaching our children hymns?
Because hymns are more than songs we sing at church. They are theology set to music. They teach us about God, sin, grace, salvation, faith, suffering, hope, and the faithfulness of Christ.
And they connect our children to the generations of Christians who came before us. Over the next several weeks, our children will be learning hymns alongside our Habits lessons. We want them to know not only what we sing, but also why we sing it.
Where did this hymn come from?
Who wrote it?
What was happening in their life?
What Scripture or truth was behind the words?
Why has the church continued singing it?
There is something beautiful about our children learning that the words they sing today were often written by real people who lived hundreds of years ago—people who experienced suffering, loss, joy, uncertainty, and hardship, and who turned to Christ for grace and truth just as we do today.
When a child learns the story behind a hymn, those words begin to mean something different.
They aren't just lyrics on a screen. They become words that have been sung by generations of believers before them. We want our children to understand that they are part of something bigger than themselves. They are part of the church—Christ's people across generations.
We will also have a YouTube playlist available for families so you can listen to the hymns at home. We hope you'll use it in the car, around the dinner table, during family worship, or whenever you have an opportunity.
Our prayer is that these songs will become familiar enough that our children carry them with them long after Wednesday night is over.
Habits that shape us.
Hymns that remind us.
Tomorrow, we'll share what this looks like specifically for our 4th–6th graders and how we're encouraging them to begin learning how to study God's Word for themselves.
