“If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied.”
— 1 Corinthians 15:19

I think this is one of the most powerful apologetics for Christianity.

Paul leaves himself no escape route.

He doesn’t say, “Even if Christianity isn’t true, at least it gives us comfort.”

He says the opposite.

“If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile” (1 Corinthians 15:17).

If Jesus stayed in that grave, Christianity completely falls apart.

But Paul was writing about something he believed actually happened in history. Christ died. He was buried. He rose. And Paul pointed to eyewitnesses, including more than 500 people at once, many of whom he said were still alive when he wrote (1 Corinthians 15:6).

Christianity was never meant to be merely a comforting belief for people afraid to die. The apostles were proclaiming that a dead Man walked out of His grave.

And if they were wrong, Paul says our faith is worthless.

But if they were right, then Jesus Christ has conquered death.

And suddenly everything He said about sin, judgment, salvation, heaven, hell, and eternal life matters more than anything else in this world.

Christianity does not stand on whether it makes us feel better. It stands on whether Christ got out of that grave.

“Christianity, if false, is of no importance, and if true, of infinite importance.

The only thing it cannot be is moderately important.”

— C. S. Lewis

There is a weariness that comes from suffering in a body that never seems to give you a break.

For some believers, sickness is not a season. It is waking up in pain again. It is exhaustion that sleep does not fix. It is disease, limitations, medications, appointments, and learning to live with a body that simply does not work the way it should.

And sometimes you are just tired of enduring it.

The Bible does not order us to pretend otherwise.

Paul said, “Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day” (2 Corinthians 4:16).

Scripture is painfully honest about what the fall has done to this world and to our bodies. Romans 8 says that even believers “groan inwardly” as we wait for “the redemption of our bodies.”

One of the hardest parts of chronic illness is wondering what happens if it gets worse.

If I am still here, how will I bear this five years from now?

But sometimes we try to carry tomorrow with strength God has only given us for today.

Jesus said, “Sufficient for the day is its own trouble” (Matthew 6:34).

There will be grace for tomorrow when tomorrow comes.

And when God does not remove the suffering, His answer is not that the suffering is bearable. Christ told Paul, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9).

His grace is sufficient precisely because your strength is not.

You can weep and groan and ask God how much longer.

But you can also say with the psalmist, “My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever” (Psalm 73:26).

Our forever hope is Christ.

And for everyone who belongs to Him, there is coming a morning when you will wake up and nothing will hurt.

Until then, He does not promise that you will never be brought to the end of your strength here.

He promises something better.

When you reach the end of your strength, you have not reached the end of His.

Oh wow, this is so true!
