We're thankful for all the work being done right now at General Conference in South Africa. This morning our new bishops were elected and we join with our whole denomination in praying for them and their leadership!

This week we started a new series that's going to carry us through most of the rest of the year, working through the first half of Genesis. It's the book everything else in the Bible builds on, so we're taking our time with it.

We started at the very beginning, and the biggest reveal in the whole chapter isn't the six days of creation. It's what happens right at the end of day six. Every ancient civilization around Israel saved the phrase "image of God" for kings and pharaohs alone. Genesis takes that same language and hands it to everyone.

That means the person who's hardest for you to love this week is walking around carrying the exact same worth you are. That's not a nice sentiment tacked onto the end of a sermon. It's the reason every human life matters.

This week wraps up our "Living Well Together" series, and it lands on the one question underneath all of it. Why does any of this actually matter?

Jesus prayed something specific on the night before he died. He asked the Father that his followers would be one, so the world would believe he was who he said he was. Not the biggest building in town. Not the best theology. Not the right worship style. Unity.

Your coworkers notice how you talk about the people who annoy you at church. Your neighbors notice whether you actually showed up for the guy going through the divorce or just said you would. That's the evidence people are watching for, whether we realize it or not.

This doesn't mean every church has to look the same or agree on everything. Paul and Barnabas had a sharp falling out and still spoke well of each other for the rest of their lives. There's a real difference between division and separation, and we dig into it this week.
