Benjamin Franklin is often presented as the quintessential Enlightenment deist—a man who believed in a distant Creator but rejected God’s active involvement in human affairs.

Then there’s Franklin’s own testimony.

At age 81, during the Constitutional Convention of 1787, Franklin stood before the delegates and declared that America’s prayers during the Revolution “were heard, and they were graciously answered.” He went on to say, “The longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see… that God governs in the affairs of men.”

Those are remarkable statements. They describe a God who hears prayer, answers prayer, governs history, fulfills Scripture, and blesses nations.

This wasn’t the first time America’s founders sought God’s wisdom, either. Both the Continental Congress and the Constitutional Convention opened sessions with prayer on multiple occasions, reflecting a widespread belief that national success depended upon divine guidance—not merely human ingenuity.

Read Franklin’s words for yourself, then decide: Does this sound like the language of a man who believed God simply wound up the universe and walked away?
