ALABASTER OFFERING - September 6th, 2026

What is Alabaster? The Alabaster Offering provides funds for property and buildings around the world. While we understand the church consists of the people of God and not a building, buildings erected for the purpose of ministry help provide a sense of permanence, functionally enhance ministry efforts, and convey an attitude that the Church of the Nazarene intends to “put down roots.”

Alabaster funds are used to provide places where people worship, heal, learn, and missionaries live.

Read: Deut. 22:22-30

Talk: This is another example of God protecting women from being made destitute. Passages like v. 29 in many translations seem insane to us; but there is a lot of cultural understanding that is needed to make sense of it all. To oversimplify it (looking especially at this example) a human being was not to be used
and discarded; the provisions given to the woman would ensure she was well cared for at the risk of the social destruction of the man. Looking at the larger passage, are there any people you have been exploiting lately?

Do: Ask God to use you to bring liberation for the exploited and downcast through the salvation Jesus alone offers.

Read: Deut. 22:13-21

Talk: Here is yet another bizarre passage! It needs to be read (along with tomorrow’s passage) in light of the larger body of Scripture it is found in. These passages have been addressing how God cares for the big and little things; no one and nothing are beyond His consideration as too great or too little. God,
here, is setting protections on women from being dishonored at the whim of her husband. Further, there were consequences for if he failed to be who he was supposed to be. Who are some people you know that could be considered the “least of these”?

Do: Remember, God cares deeply for all people; and especially for those who are being oppressed (the Psalms and Proverbs talk a lot about this!). Look for ways to help support the down and out of our community and church today.

Read: Deut. 22:5, 9-12

Talk: There should be a distinction between a follower of God and the world; this is made more abundantly clear by God’s reminder of our apartness exhibited in how we dress, farm, and eat (remember the dietary laws!). What are some ways your life is set apart from the rest of the world (for example: how you talk, dress, shop, etc.)?

Do: Think of someone you know who lived a distinct life. What was different about how they lived? Think about how Jesus talked and lived and how it was different from the rest of the world. Think of ways you can live more like Jesus today.

Talk: God cares about the big thing and the little things; He even cares about birds and home safety! What are some other “small things” God cares about? What are some things the world would consider insignificant that we need to take special care to observe?

Do: Spend time today in prayer asking God to give you an eye for “the small things” of life; are there little areas you need to spend more time nurturing? Small things you need to stop doing? Small things you need to give to God? Ask God to bring them to your attention so you can give them over to Him.
