ANA GLOBAL TRIBUTE

"HOPE FOR ALL"

PR. CHARLES D. BROOKS:
THE VOICE THAT STILL BREATHES LIFE

By Adventist News Agency.

In 1974, when national television had almost no Black preachers proclaiming the Three Angels' Messages, one man stepped in front of the camera, opened his Bible, and declared: Breath of Life.

That man was Pr. Charles Decatur Brooks (1930-2016).

For 60 years, he proved that evangelism is not an event — it is a life.

THE LEGEND WE HONOR:

1. A Soul-Winner Without Borders.
20,000+ souls baptized. 16 churches established. 6 continents crossed. From city crusades to open-air campaigns, Pr. Brooks embodied Mark 16:15 — “Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.” He didn't wait for crowds to come to him. He went to them.

2. A Trailblazer Who Turned Technology Into A Pulpit.
As the founding Speaker/Director of Breath of Life for 23 years (1974-1997), he created one of the earliest and longest-running Black religious television programs in America. At a time of racial division, he brought Hope For All into living rooms across the nation.

He stood alongside Adventist media pioneers like H.M.S. Richards and George Vandeman, and opened the door for generations of televangelists — Mark Finley, Dwight Nelson, Doug Batchelor, Carlton Byrd — whose ministries still reach millions today.

3. A Mentor Who Multiplied Mission.
As the longest-serving Field Secretary of the General Conference, he trained hundreds of ministers in how to preach with clarity, conviction, and love. His colleagues said: “He could change the atmosphere of a room just by his presence.”

Ted N.C. Wilson, former General Conference President, called him “a highly dedicated and successful evangelist and biblical preacher who loved the Lord, His prophetic church, and the Advent message.”

WHY HIS LIFE MUST INSPIRE OUR MISSION TO THE END:

Pr. Brooks rested from his labors on June 5, 2016, but his question still echoes: What are we doing with the breath God gave us?

1. Mission Is Movement.
He didn't preach to comfortable pews only. He went to the streets, the stadiums, the airwaves. The Gospel was never meant to be contained. If the world uses screens to spread distraction, the church must use them to spread Hope For All.

2. Mission Is Longevity, Not Hype.
60 years of faithful preaching. Not a viral moment. Not a one-week campaign. True evangelism is daily faithfulness — studying, praying, witnessing, repeating — until Jesus comes.

3. Mission Is Multiplication.
The greatest measure of his ministry is not how many he baptized, but how many soul-winners he created. Are we training someone to take our place? A legacy that doesn't reproduce will expire. A legacy that mentors will live forever.

4. Mission Is Hope.
He preached during segregation, during hardship, during uncertainty — yet his message was always hope. That's what ANA stands for: Hope For All. In a world drowning in bad news, we are called to be a Breath of Life.

THE CALL FOR US TODAY:

Adventist News Agency was born to do what Pr. Brooks did — carry hope across barriers.

He used television. We have television, plus YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, podcasts. What is our excuse?

He preached until his last breath. Will we scroll in silence?

Today, ANA honors Pr. Charles D. Brooks not just with words, but with a renewed commitment:

We will continue to report truth.
We will continue to inspire faith.
We will continue to carry Hope For All to every nation, kindred, tongue, and people — till the very end.

Because the mission that burned in 1974 must burn brighter in 2026.

Rest well, faithful servant. We will carry the breath forward.

“The greatest work, the noblest effort in which men can engage is to point sinners to Christ.” — Ellen G. White

Through powerful Bible preaching, evangelistic ministry, and a strong emphasis on personal faith in God, Pastor Skeete has encouraged many to seek a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ and to prepare for His soon return.

His testimony reminds us that genuine faith is not merely about what we can explain—it is also about what we experience with God.

“I cannot prove to you that God exists, but I have proven to myself that He exists by what He has done in my life. Faith is not sustained by arguments but by encounters. When God moves in your life personally, doubt loses its voice.”
