Throughout the liturgical year, the Church honors the Saints, especially the Martyrs who gave their lives for the proclamation of the Gospel. On their feast days, priests wear red vestments. Fr. Mark shares the meaning behind this powerful and beautiful tradition.

As we honor Memorial Day, we pause to remember and pray for the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Their sacrifice reflects the words of Christ, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” (John 15:13)

May God grant eternal rest to all who have died in military service and bring comfort to their families. Let us keep them always in our prayers.

Prayer for Memorial Day from the USCCB

God of power and mercy, you destroy war and put down earthly pride. Banish violence from our midst and wipe away our tears, that we may all deserve to be called your sons and daughters.
Keep in your mercy those men and women who have died in the cause of freedom and bring them safely into your kingdom of justice and peace.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
