Pentecost Sunday was a joyful and full day at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart — beautiful liturgies, sacraments conferred, wonderful music, and meaningful moments of celebration and gratitude for several of our young musicians.

We also said goodbye and bon voyage (for now!) to one of our section leaders, Gabriel Magallón, who graduates this year from HSPVA and heads this fall to The Juilliard School. Over the last two years it has been a delight to watch and hear him grow in chanting, cantoring, section-leading, and solo work, including featured roles in our offerings of Bach’s Magnificat and Liszt’s Via Crucis this season. We’ve enjoyed cheering him accumulate major professional accolades from the Schmidt Vocal Arts Competition, Houston Grand Opera, TMEA All State, and Houston Boy Choir. The supportive camaraderie of our bass section (pictured!) and all of Cor Jesu is one of the joys of cathedral music-making — musicians of all ages learning from and with one another.

The day before Pentecost, Gabriel hosted a graduation recital and celebration, complete with a thrilling finale alongside his parents Alisa and Alejando Magallon, both professional opera singers. Watch for this young man — we suspect we will be hearing him on major early music stages in the years ahead, and singing sacred music with great care at a church near you!

Pentecost Sunday was a joyful and full day at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart — beautiful liturgies, sacraments conferred, wonderful music, and meaningful moments of celebration and gratitude for several of our young musicians.

We said “Goodbye but see you later” to our Organ Scholar, André Lombardi, as he heads home to California before traveling on to summer study at Yale and other exciting opportunities. André has been an invaluable and exacting member of our music team, providing excellent organ playing and difficult accompaniments not only for Sundays, but also for our major works and concerts. Strong organ playing is a critical component of any great choral program, and André’s musicianship, versatility, and growing conducting skills have blessed our community greatly this year. He also led our newer ensemble, Cor Angelicus, this season. Happily, he will return to us this fall for his senior year at Rice University.

André previously sang in John Romeri’s children’s choir and studied organ with Juilliard graduate David Ball at Christ Cathedral. We were especially happy to welcome his very supportive parents Liza and Peter Lombardi, who also serve their home church, for multiple Pentecost Masses this weekend.

BTS: Tonight marked the final installment of the Scanlan Foundation’s Adoration by Candlelight Series for this school year.

We celebrated the season with a whole program of chipper Easter motets, corresponding scripture, and an Easter homily excerpt from Pope Leo the Great.

I’m so proud of these singers. They and others on our team rotate and consistently rise to the challenge - often with very little time - to create something truly beautiful and prayerful. What they offer in these evenings of quiet devotion, scripture, and music is not easy, and they do it with generosity and artistry every single time.

Way to go Marinna Carmichael, Julia Cecilia Starr Ashlee Hernandez Tabetha Steege Ashley Ramirez Edgar Diaz Jr. Jason Gabino Gabriel Gutierrez Carlos Garciajr and Jason Watt!

Grateful for this community, and for the space to make music that serves something larger than ourselves.

We’ll be back next year and you will join us to sit with Jesus by Candlelight. 🕯️
