Last week, the Keweenaw Unitarian Universalist Fellowship organized a hike at KLT's Paavola Wetlands Nature Area, led by Linda Belote, a longtime friend and supporter of KLT.

Linda's late husband, Jim, took care of Paavola Wetlands for many years, serving as an excellent steward of this nature area. Site stewards like Jim develop a special connection to a piece of land over time—and a deep knowledge of what makes it special. Linda has spent many years hiking the trails Jim cared for, so these hikers truly got a unique perspective on Paavola Wetlands. 💚

Saturday Seminar with Rev. Bruce, "Our Covenant"

September 19, 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at KUUF

At every Sunday service, we read together a line from our Fellowship's covenant, which was adopted in April 2020, but we seldom have a chance to read and reflect on the statement in its entirety, and in relation to KUUF's mission and vision. In this session, we'll learn about the meaning and history of covenantal language in the Unitarian Universalist tradition, and we'll explore the community-building uses of our current covenant.

This Sunday, September 6, KUUF holds their annual Water Ceremony.

The Water Communion, also sometimes called Water Ceremony, was first used at a Unitarian Universalist (UU) worship service in the 1980s. Many UU congregations now hold a Water Communion once a year, often in the fall, as a welcome and re-gathering. KUUF has held a water ceremony since 2015.

The Water Ceremony/ Communion Service is an opportunity for Unitarian Universalist congregations to express their commitment to our Sixth Principle: We covenant to affirm and promote the goal of world community with peace, liberty and justice for all. Pastor Bucky Beach leads the service.

Please bring a small amount of water that is meaningful to you.

Service will be in person and on Zoom, and starts at 10:30am. Email [email protected] for login information.

Petition our elected officials NOT to support the Copperwood Mine: Postcard campaign this Sunday.

New funding has just been approved to support the Highland Copper proposal to situate a copper mine just 2 miles from Lake Superior, on the border of the Porcupine Mountains State Park and Wilderness area. The ore quality there is 1.5% copper and the rest would be mine tailings made toxic by the sulfides necessary to extract the copper—and such copper-sulfide tailings ponds have all been subject to acid and metal leakage https://earthworks.org/issues/copper-sulfide-mining/

Verna Mize wrote thousands of letters to legislators and collected 5000 signatures on a petition to President Nixon to keep a mining company from dumping taconite tailings into Lake Superior. Now it is our turn to protect Lake Superior. If the Copperwood project goes through, the impact on the streams, wetlands and lake will be significant https://savethewildup.org/copperwood-mine-facts/.

The KUUF Justice Ministry joins with the Green Sanctuary Committee to ask people to call, or send postcards, letters, and emails to our Michigan politicians who have voiced public support for this project.

We will have a table with postcards, stamps, addresses, phone numbers and more information at the service on Sunday, 8/30.

Copper sulfide mines can cause severe impacts to drinking water aquifers, contamination of farmland, contamination and loss of fish and wildlife and their habitat, and risks to public health.

The Green Sanctuary Committee will host a UU outing at Paavola Wetlands on Sunday, August 23. Linda Belote will be our guide. We’ll depart KUUF at 12:30 and travel to Paavola Wetlands. Carpooling will be available. The outings are for families and adults. Bring water and snacks and dress for the weather. Direct questions to Joan Chadde [email protected] or Audra Thurston.
