Re-Awakening Curiosity

Curiosity is one of my favorite qualities. I equate it with openness, wonder, non-judging, and the beginner's mind of not-knowing. Young children walk, and talk, and reach out and touch things, absolutely filled with wonder and curiosity about the world. They haven't closed their minds to things yet. I encourage all of us to re-awaken our curiosity. I'll share some ways that I use curiosity in my meditation practice that are very useful.

What can we do as Unitarian Universalists in response to the rise of right-wing authoritarianism in our country, especially in the form of “Christian Nationalism?”

Whatever strategies and specific actions
may be required of us, it is critically important that we ground ourselves firmly in the history and
theology of our liberal religious tradition.

This Saturday, June 6, 10am-11:30am, at KUUF, Rev. Bruce leads the "Minister’s Saturday Seminar: Responding to Religious Nationalism," on the thought of one of modern Unitarian Universalism’s most important theologians: James Luther Adams.

As a theological student and young minister, Adams made several extended visits to Germany in the 1930’s, which gave him a front-row seat to the rise of fascism in that country. Those experiences became decisive for the formation of his critical thinking about the role of social ethics in liberal religion. I had the privilege of working for “JLA” (as he was affectionately called) during my
own time in divinity school, and I consider him to be one of my theological mentors.

We’ll explore the key ideas of Adams and consider their relevance and importance for our time. Questions?

This Sunday, June 7, is the annual Flower Communion at KUUF.

Please bring a favorite flower to the service today. We’ll create a congregational ‘bouquet’ representing the beauty of all our individual blossoming selves and then celebrate the traditional Unitarian ceremony of the ‘flower communion.’ Each participant will choose a flower to take home other than the one they brought, symbolizing our interdependent community. Rev. Bruce Johnson leads the service.

Service will be in person and on Zoom, and starts at 10:30am. All are welcome.

Cultivating a Down-to-Earth Curiosity

Astronauts find it hard to fit words to the awe, wonder and curiosity that is felt while experiencing the earth from space. Now that Isle Royale is "open" for those willing and able to make the journey, Pastor Bucky was reminded of a talk he gave on the Ranger in trade for free passage to the Island. It is titled "'There are secrets in the rocks. . ." What can they tell us? Early American history of Isle Royale: Indigenous People on The Island pre-European Influence."

This Sunday, May 24, Keren Tischler leads the service, "Cultivating a Down-to-Earth Curiosity."

Astronauts find it hard to fit words to the awe, wonder and curiosity that is felt while experiencing the earth from space. This perspective shift can be profound and translate into a deep sense of responsibility and care upon returning to Earth. One of the Artemis II astronauts recently assigned this homework to space-curious kids: stop and really look at something growing out of the earth. Let yourself be impressed. I invite us all to do this simple exercise in the next couple of weeks, no matter our age! When we come together, we’ll explore what it is to cultivate a curiosity that sees with fresh eyes, a curiosity inclusive of the whole of experience on our blue planet.
