I was privileged to attend the Southern Baptist Convention Annual Meeting last week, representing Calvary Baptist and
Liberty Association...below is a brief summary:
· Messengers approved allocating 51% of Cooperative Program dollars to the International Mission Board. Capping a 16-year process, the International Mission Board (IMB) will begin receiving 51 percent of national Cooperative Program receipts annually in the 2026-2027 fiscal year.
· “Truth and Unity” Amendment, strengthening the language regarding the issue of women pastors, received a 2/3 affirmative vote. An amendment specifying the role of pastor and the act of preaching as limited to men, brought by Southern Baptist Theological Seminary President Albert Mohler, received the first of two required two-thirds votes by messengers on June 10 to become part of the SBC Constitution. Among 8,074 votes cast, 6,028 (76.66 percent) were in favor of the amendment. There were 2,026 (25.9 percent) votes against. The Truth and Unity Amendment, as Mohler titled it, will also go before messengers at next year’s annual meeting in Indianapolis.
· Florida Pastor W***y Rice and South Carolina Pastor Josh Powell were the candidates seeking the office of SBC President. Rice was elected President with 57 % of the vote, taking the helm from outgoing President Clint Pressley. Rice was considered the more conservative of the two candidates running.
· Several resolutions expressing the sentiment of messengers were approved, dealing with such topics as immigration, assisted su***de, ministry to the disabled, and bivocational pastors. Southern Baptists, in a resolution, warned against a cultural rebranding of assisted su***de as a form of medical care and reaffirmed their commitment to the sanctity of life from conception until natural death at the 2026 SBC Annual Meetinng. Assisted su***de has expanded significantly in the United States and is now legal in at least 13 states and the District of Columbia with more pending, leading messengers to reiterate their stance against “euthanasia and assisted su***de in all its forms.”
· Several messengers proposed the creation of a variety of task forces & study groups, not all of which were approved by the vote of the Convention.
· Abuse prevention remained a concern, especially for adults with disabilities.
· The 2027 SBC Annual Meeting is planned for Indianapolis, Indiana, from June 5–8, 2027, after being relocated from Salt Lake City due to venue renovations.
