Sunday School 9:30, Worship 10:30 -Wednesday night Bible Study at 6:30. Our History
In tracing the history of the Purdy Separate Baptist Church, it is found that we are minus some of the church records in the early days. Perhaps many of them were not written down, and several have been destroyed. Purdy Church joined the South Kentucky Association in 1893 with a membership of 23. The first delegat
es of the association were Bro. Burton, and Bro. Burton. We’re not sure when the first church building was erected at Purdy, but it is believed to be around 1903. The story is told about some men who were at the Purdy store, talking in whittling, when the subject of a church building came up. One man said, “We need a church building.” Another man said, “Let’s don’t just sit here talking. Let’s build it.” So, they got up immediately and went to work. One of the men, Bro. Eli Burton, donated the ground. Some believe there was another building before this one. Other believe services were held in homes. Services were held in this building until 1953, when the people voted to build a new church. With Bro. Roy R. Wilson as Pastor; Bro. Sidney Burton, Clerk; Sister Dollie Streeval, Treasurer; and $123.40 in the church treasury, the new building was started. Church services were held in the old airplane hangar at Christine until the old church was torn down and the one until in the same spot. Many men and women of the church and community worked hard to complete the new Purdy Church. Those who were able and had any time to work donated their labor on the new building. After tearing down the old church building, volunteers, poured concrete, measured and cut wood, installed some of the plumbing and electricity, painted, and added the finishing touches to the building. Others donated money to purchase the materials. With the help of dedicated church, members and families in the community, the building was soon completed. The new church in which we worship today was dedicated to God on Sunday, November 18, 1956, with Bro. Everett Brockman delivering the dedication sermon. Purdy belongs to the South Kentucky Assocation. We still worship the same God as the Purdy Church members did in 1893. Through the good and bad times, we have tried to remain true to Jesus Christ, and hope that same spirit will be carried for hundreds of years to come.
