DAY OF REMEMBRANCE FOR KING RADBOD OF FRISIA

This month we celebrate valiant King Radbod of Frisia. King of Frisia from about 680 CE onwards he was responsible for keeping his lands free of Frankish domination and is often described as Frisia’s last independent ruler. Radbod spent the bulk of his reign battling against the neighboring Franks, first fighting against Pippin II until he died in 714 and then against Pippin’s son, Charles Martel. Radbod also did all he could to push Christianity out of his lands, in christianity he saw an extension of Frankish influence and control; he also saw it as a destroyer of his own native Frisian culture. The battles between Radbod and the Franks went back and forth until finally in 714, with the death of Pippin, Radbod was able to send all the priests and monks out of his lands and pushed the Frankish armies completely out as well until his death in 719.

Radbod is perhaps best known to Odinists today for his refusal to be baptized in the Christian faith. Radbod was on the verge of being baptized when he turned to the priest and asked if he would see his ancestors in heaven. The priest, being honest(for once), said no, anyone not of the Christian faith was sent to suffer in their horrid fiery realm of punishment which they called Hell. Radbod replied, ” Then I would rather be suffering there with them than go to heaven with a pack of beggars.” He then promptly pushed the priests out of his country and remained tru to his ancestral ways until his death.

Radbod has much to teach us today. We aren’t forced at sword point to accept alien religions today, but we do find ourselves in a similar position. For many today the forward march of political correctness has led right to our doorsteps. We have become pariahs in the eyes of society because we refuse to accept its decadent ways and yet here we are. Here we are remaining steadfast in our loyalty and devotion to our Gods. We have shunned the foreign influences of our age and sent them scurrying from our homes. Rather than slide into the negative mindset of a beaten opponent we hold our heads high and boldly build positivity in ourselves, in our families, and in all those we can around us. We are assured of the rightness of our deeds by the echoes from the past of brave men like Radbod.

Hail King Radbod of Frisia!

Day of Remembrance for Unn the Deep Minded

Today we celebrate Unn the Deep- Minded. Unn comes to us from the Laxdaela Saga.
Unn was a strong woman who refused to yield to the tyrannical Harald Finehair. She traveled to Scotland and helped to create a solid future for her granddaughters. Later she journeyed to Iceland and settled there. Here she became quite a successful woman and strove to build a future for her descendants. She died at her grandson's wedding after she had named him her heir. She was given a traditional burial and funerary feast.
Unn was a strong woman who sought only to strengthen her family line. She refused to yield to anyone when it came to her offspring. Her life was spent creating a secure future for her family. For her, family came before all else and she was willing to do whatever was needed to protect her family.
One who almost certainly became a disir for her family line. A true matriarch, a good woman, and a role model for mothers of today.

Hail Unn the Deep-Minded!

Day of Remembrance for Sigurd the Volsung

Sigurd's tale is THE epic tale of the Northern lands.

Treachery, deceit, dragons, dwarves, valkyries, lost love, talking birds, and plenty of fighting..... It is a tale that has inspired our folk for hundreds of years.

Sigurd, an untried warrior, is betrayed by a trusted friend and nearly killed by a greedy jotun turned dragon. Later he walks through a wall of fire to meet and awaken a valkyrie. After many wars and battles, he finds himself killed by someone he trusted at the goading of a selfish and petty woman....... A tragedy par excellence

Sigurd's tale is the saga of our folk in many ways. A recurrent theme played out repeatedly for thousands of years.

Betrayed by someone we should have been able to trust we are thrown into harsh situations, or worse yet, we are killed outright. Sometimes these harsh troubles inspire us to be more, other times they cause our demise.

There is much to learn in studying Sigurd's tale and even more to entertain.

May we today, like Sigurd, always walk with the Gods. Through any and all adversities may we come out stronger, wiser, and better overall. May we always hold our heads high with pride in our hearts marching boldly towards whatever the Norns have decreed.

Hail Sigurd!

DAY OF REMEMBRANCE FOR KING GUTHROTH

On May 9th we remember and honour King Guthroth of Guthbrands Dale.
According to Snorri Sturlusson's 'Heimskringla', King Guthroth was one of 5 kings who ruled in the Upplands of Norway during the reign of Olaf the bastard. Olaf was going through Norway converting people by force and blackmail.
Olaf sent word to the 5 kings that he wanted to travel through their regions. So the still Heathen kings came together to discuss this visit and what it meant.
They quickly came to the conclusion that a visit from Olaf couldn't possibly be good. And yet 4 of the 5 grew fearful and wanted to just go along with Olaf and whatever he had planned. But one, one bold man, stood and gave a stirring speech that rallied the other 4... that one noble king was none other than Guthroth.
With the kings finally united, word went out across the land to rally the landowners to stand against Olaf. And yet, just as the menfolk were gathering for war one treacherous "man" went to Olaf and told him of the 5 kings' plan.
Olaf, with his retinue, quickly marched on the Upplands and by the light of Mani, rowed boats across a lake and right up to the village where the kings were staying and surrounded their hall. As Sunna rose the kings awoke and realized the dire situation they were in.
Rather than fight a futile battle that would have seen their families harmed the kings surrendered to Olaf.
Olaf, being the forgiving xtian he was, quickly had one kings eyes plucked out, banished 3 other kings, and took all their lands and property. But for King Guthroth he saved something special... for his eloquent speech that had rallied the Upplands against Olaf, Guthroth had his tongue cut out. Never to be able to utter another word again.
Guthroth knew the risk and yet he stood when others only wanted to sit. He rallied the fearful and inspired them to stand firm against the tyranny of Olaf and his one God faith.
For his courage and willingness to sacrifice everything for his folk we honour King Guthroth. For his willingness to stand when others sat we raise a horn up to Guthroth's memory.
From his tale we see clearly that one bold man can truly change what may, at first sight, seem already finished. We today are again faced with belief systems that would see us silenced, see our tongues removed. Belief systems that would happily see our folk and our Gods erased from the world and our glorious history scrubbed from the record. Now is our time! Now is when we need to be bold! Now is when we need to stand tall as Guthorth did and rally those around us!
Hail the Bold!

Hail King Guthroth!
