DAY OF REMEMBRANCE FOR KING GUTHROTH

On May 9th we remember and honour King Guthroth of Guthbrands Dale.
According to Snorri Sturlusson's 'Heimskringla', King Guthroth was one of 5 kings who ruled in the Upplands of Norway during the reign of Olaf the bastard. Olaf was going through Norway converting people by force and blackmail.
Olaf sent word to the 5 kings that he wanted to travel through their regions. So the still Heathen kings came together to discuss this visit and what it meant.
They quickly came to the conclusion that a visit from Olaf couldn't possibly be good. And yet 4 of the 5 grew fearful and wanted to just go along with Olaf and whatever he had planned. But one, one bold man, stood and gave a stirring speech that rallied the other 4... that one noble king was none other than Guthroth.
With the kings finally united, word went out across the land to rally the landowners to stand against Olaf. And yet, just as the menfolk were gathering for war one treacherous "man" went to Olaf and told him of the 5 kings' plan.
Olaf, with his retinue, quickly marched on the Upplands and by the light of Mani, rowed boats across a lake and right up to the village where the kings were staying and surrounded their hall. As Sunna rose the kings awoke and realized the dire situation they were in.
Rather than fight a futile battle that would have seen their families harmed the kings surrendered to Olaf.
Olaf, being the forgiving xtian he was, quickly had one kings eyes plucked out, banished 3 other kings, and took all their lands and property. But for King Guthroth he saved something special... for his eloquent speech that had rallied the Upplands against Olaf, Guthroth had his tongue cut out. Never to be able to utter another word again.
Guthroth knew the risk and yet he stood when others only wanted to sit. He rallied the fearful and inspired them to stand firm against the tyranny of Olaf and his one God faith.
For his courage and willingness to sacrifice everything for his folk we honour King Guthroth. For his willingness to stand when others sat we raise a horn up to Guthroth's memory.
From his tale we see clearly that one bold man can truly change what may, at first sight, seem already finished. We today are again faced with belief systems that would see us silenced, see our tongues removed. Belief systems that would happily see our folk and our Gods erased from the world and our glorious history scrubbed from the record. Now is our time! Now is when we need to be bold! Now is when we need to stand tall as Guthorth did and rally those around us!
Hail the Bold!

Hail King Guthroth!

May the coming months be ones filled with successes in all of our endeavors. May our individual victories be victories for our folk as well.
May the coming summer be something to be celebrated and enjoyed rather than just something to be endured and tolerated. Get out there and make some memories this summer.

DAY OF REMEMBRANCE FOR JARL HAAKON

Today we take a few moments to honor Jarl Haakon, de facto king of Norway from 975 to 995. He is certainly a man deserving of a horn or two. He was a strong follower of the ancestral gods of his people; he even claimed descent from holy Odin Himself.

Haakon was a mighty warrior and at one time helped his neighbor to the south, Harald Bluetooth, do battle with Otto II, the Holy Roman Emperor. For his help, Harald forcibly converted Haakon to the desert faith and wanted to send priests back to Norway with Haakon. Haakon played along until his boats were well away from the shore... then, just like a true son of Odin, Haakon ordered the priests overboard and sailed home free of the Middle Eastern taint. For nearly another 20 years, Haakon ruled his lands and the Old Ways thrived.

Maybe we can't throw priests overboard these days, but we can do our utmost to not allow monotheism or its sister creed, political correctness, to creep into our lives. We can stand strong in our beliefs even when it might not be the easiest thing to do. We can, maybe, give our children a life without the alien influences so prevalent today.....turn off the TV and the phone and get outside for the afternoon. By staying trĂș and standing up for our ancestral ways, maybe we can be the example that brings others home to our noble faith.

Hail Jarl Haakon!

Ragnar Lodbrok Day

Early in the morning on Easter Sunday in 845, you're headed to church to attend Easter mass before a big feast at home. Off in the distance you hear a thump, muffled, barely audible, then another, and another... there is almost a rhythm to them. Suddenly out of the fog come dragon heads, ugly snarling, and all to quickly your world goes upside down.
Vikings! Raiders! The shouts and screams fill the air, but do nothing to protect the people from the spears and arrows that are flying here and there.
The church bells begin to ring out an alarm, but it is to late; the Vikings are already inside the city. Why? What kind of God allows his worshippers to suffer this way?

And so goes the story of one of the most famous heros of our lore: Ragnar Lodbrok, semi-mythic warrior and certified bad ass. The man fought dragons, married a shield maiden, fathered numerous sons, and died as boldly as he had lived.
Obviously he also had a good sense of humor since he chose one of xtianity's holiest days to attack and sack Paris. I can only imagine the chuckles and laughs around the fire when he told his lieutenants his plan.
This was truly a man against time, one of those rare individuals who turns the world around him to his will. A bold warrior who never flinched. A true Odin's man who laughed as he lay dying.
And now, over a 1,000 years later, his story has even inspired Hollywood to make a television series about him. Sure it was typical Hollywood drivel, but it inspired many a nerd and basement dweller to attend their local ren fair, get funny hair cuts and wear faux fur and even to buy a Mjolnir pendants or two. And there were even a few of those, mostly well meaning, folk that made their way to Asatru and are now living tru and honoring their holy Gods.
So truly the idea that you are not dead until your name is forgotten is at play here. Ragnar, mighty warrior, is still inspiring people all these many years later.
And so today we honor his memory and lift a horn up in his name. Hail Ragnar Lodbrok!

Issue 21 of 'The Wolf's Howl' is in the mail now and copies are headed across the 4 corners of the US to men and women both free and in prison.
This is our 5 year anniversary... we've been doing this for 5 years and are hoping for another 25 at least. In those 5 years we have grown from a few dozen subscribers to nearly 300. We have helped men and women in prison to have access to quality materials to learn about our path. We have sent in several hundred Poetic Eddas and other titles free of charge to prison chapel libraries and to inmates themselves. And we have even helped get Asatru approved as a religion at a few prisons and gotten people permission to celebrate our holy days together as a group.
It has been an amazing 5 years. Yes we've had a few low points, but the good has definitely outweighed the bad by a wide margin.
We have not been one of those outreaches that goes around always begging and sticking our hands out. We have been largely supported by people's donations and our own product sales and been able to maintain our mostly self-sufficient nature.
We will not beg, but we will ask for your support. We are a proud folkish Asatru/Odinist outreach that could use your support if you are able. We desperately need a new printer for our newsletter, ours is the first one we bought 5 years ago so it's getting a bit tired. And we need to restock our Eddas and other titles we regularly send in at no cost.
Thank you to those who are able and willing to help out. Even a newsletter subscription is a help to our efforts. Our website has both a webstore and a donation page. Thank you again.

DAY OF REMEMBRANCE FOR OLVIR
On March 9th we honour the memory of Olvir of Egg, an Asatru martyr. Olvir lived in Norway during the time of king Olaf Tryggvason. Like many of his countrymen he remained true to the Gods of his ancestors, even after Olaf had declared christianity the law of the land. Olvir was, in fact, one of the leading proponents of the ancestral ways at that time. He was an organizer of the celebrations of the holy days and was most likely a priest of our holy Gods.

At some point Olaf was informed that the ancestral Gods were still being honoured......upon hearing this he moved quickly against Olvir and the others who had been maintaining the old rites. Many were killed, some were driven from their homes.......Olvir was among those dead when all was said and done. And, to add insult to injury, Olaf confiscated all their lands and refused to pay any compensation for their murders.

Over and over throughout history we have seen similar stories play out. Regular people, just wanting to be left alone and yet some "authority" decides that is not to be. Even into this day and age we see such things happening....... We see those wishing to practice the spirituality of their Ancestors labeled as hate mongers and bigots and outlawed from society. It really isn't much different than the decrees of Olaf all those years ago. The only real difference is we've changed a militant christianity for a militant political correctness; rather than face murder or torture we face the loss of jobs, friends, and family. Today though we have the lessons of the past to guide us and show us a positive way forward, a way through the minefield of modern society so that we can create a future for the next generations of Asatruar.

Hail Olvir and all those like him throughout history. Bold men and women who stood against tyranny to preserve something "bigger" than themselves. Let their lessons be our guide now in this chaotic modern time.

Hail Olvir!

Day of Remembrance for Eyvind Kinnrifi

Eyvind was a chieftain in the Trondheim region of Norway during the reign of Olaf Tryggvasson. Eyvind was a devout Heathen and follower of his native ancestral ways.
Olaf sought to bring his new found xtianity to all of Norway and was willing to do whatever it took to bring the religion of tolerance and love to the Northlands.
Eyvind was captured/kidnapped by several of Olaf's men and brought before the king. Olaf kindly asked Eyvind to accept the one God faith, Eyvind politely refused. Next Olaf offered Eyvind land and money, Eyvind again refused. Finally, in a fit of rage, Olaf ordered a bowl of hot coals sat on Eyvind's stomach...... Eyvind died a most horrible death, but never accepted the desert faith or betrayedhis ancestors.
Eyvind remains a celebrated martyr all these many years later. People around the world still lift horns in his honor and hail his name. A noble man who refused to yield!
How many today would be able to fill his shoes? How many today, in this materialistic, wage slave world, wouldn't sell their faith for a few shekels? How many would be willing to give their lives for their Gods?
Thankfully nobody is trying to torture us with hot coals these days......
Remember Eyvind today. Remember him and his steadfast refusal to abandon the ways of his ancestors and lift a horn to his memory.

Hail Eyvind!

Shared from the author, Kyle Davis .
I've been anxiously awaiting the release of this title since I first heard about it.

My first book just came out. If you'd like to see my perspective on matters such as eschatology, cosmology, and the genealogy of the gods then this would be a good place to go. I attempted to take the many years of research and debates among members of the Norroena Society, and broader heathenry in general and simplify them. This isn't a typical research book but is meant to be a guide towards Sedian Belief and Practice.

There's also some great artwork inside from artists such as RĂșnar Hall and Drumspyder.

Day of Remembrance
For
Raud the Strong

Raud was another brave ancestor who lived during the reign of Olaf the bastard.
Raud was known to be a chieftain and Gothi in Northern Norway. A strong and proud promoter of our ancestral folkways. He was also known to have a dragonship far better and larger than anything Olaf had in his fleet.
Olaf decided this man needed to be converted to the desert faith and so he set out to do just that. Eventually Raud was captured and ended up in Olaf's hands.
Raud refused to turn his back on his Ancestors or his Gods. For his loyalty Olaf had a snake stuffed down his throat. A horrible death to be sure. Not much of the often talked about xtian love in that horrific misdeed.
After this murderous action, Olaf took Raud's magnificent dragonship for himself. Begs the question, did "saint" Olaf kill this man merely for a ship? For personal greed? Did religious differences even enter into the equation?
Raud stood tall when confronted with oppression and his death should serve as a reminder to us to also stand strong in the face of such adversity.
We who brag about going to Valhalla in one breath and cry about our stubbed toe in the next would do well to remember the strength of our ancestors. To remember that we are their descendants, their blood flows through us.
We today can either emulate their strength and push through adversity when it comes our way; or, we can spit on their memory and all they were by folding up and hiding like cowards when tough times look our way.
We are descended from noble ancestors, from men like Raud. We would do well to always remember our strong ancestors and strive, as best we can, to live up to their example.

Hail the ancestors!

Hail Raud!
