Friday | Headwaters

📖 Read:
John 7:37 - 39, Colossians 1:3 - 14

🌊 Dive Deeper:
The Mississippi River is one of the greatest rivers in the world. It flows thousands of miles, carrying trillions of gallons of water. The Mississippi has shaped cities, landscapes and history. But here’s the surprising thing: it starts small. Really, really small. At it’s source, the mighty Mississippi is little more than a narrow stream. It’s hard to believe something so mighty starts so simple and small.

In our bible passage today, Jesus says “Whoever believes in me… rivers of living water will flow from within them.” Jesus is speaking of the Holy Spirit, given to all who believe in him. The Holy Spirit has been given to you to guide, direct, refresh and remind you that you are known by God, covered in his grace and given new life in Jesus. And the life Jesus gives is not meant to stay contained. It flows and is visible for all to see, like a mighty river that cannot be hidden.

We receive this living water by faith. The challenge with faith is that it can feel so simple and small.

But remember the source! Jesus is the source! What Jesus begins does not stay small. He is at work growing your faith from something simple and small into something strong and mighty. As your faith grows, it begins to shape your life in ways that reach beyond you into your family, friendships and community. With Jesus as the source, you begin to see the mighty work of God in and through you! That’s the power of the source.

Later today, our team will stand at the source of the Mississippi. If you've been to the Headwaters, reflect on just how small the source of that mighty river is. But remember, this is where it begins. From this small source, something mighty grows.

May you be reminded that from a small source, mighty rivers flow. Jesus is your source. And from him, all life flows.

Thursday | The Overflow

📖 Read:
2 Corinthians 5:17 — 21

🌊 Dive Deeper:
This week, we’ve explored how God works in us. God brings our chaos into order. He leads us when we’re caught in the currents of life. He satisfies our longings and in Jesus we find more than we could ever want. He covers us in waves of grace through baptism. As God’s grace takes hold of our hearts, minds and lives, it begins to overflow.

In our Bible passage today, we read: “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has gone, the new has come.” This means something real changes when Jesus changes you. The old life —shaped by sin, guilt, shame and trying to prove yourself — is not who you are anymore. You have a new life, a new identity and a new purpose.

That’s what Paul is getting at when he calls us “ambassadors.” An ambassador is someone who represents someone else. What Paul is saying is that people who belong to Jesus now represent him. Another way of saying this is what God has done in you doesn’t stay contained — it overflows as a reflection and a representation of who he is. Not because you are trying to act a certain way, but because God has changed you.

When God’s grace changes you...
it overflows and changes how you see yourself and others.

When God’s forgiveness changes you...
it overflows and changes how you forgive others.

When God’s mercy changes you...
it overflows and changes how you treat people who mess up.

When God’s love changes you...
it overflows and changes how you love others.

This is what the overflow of new life in Christ looks like. It’s not about perfection, trying harder or pretending you’ve got it all together. Instead, it looks less like this world and more like Jesus.

When the truth of new life in Christ takes hold of you, it can’t be contained. It overflows.

Wednesday | Waves of Grace

📖 Read:
Romans 6:1 — 10, Titus 3:3 — 8

🌊 Dive Deeper:
Have you ever stood at the edge of a great big lake or ocean and watched the waves roll in? One wave comes, then another and another. You can stand there for ten minutes or an hour and the waves don’t run out. They just keep coming in.
God’s grace is just like those waves.

So what is grace? Grace is God’s underserved, free gift of forgiveness in Jesus. We cannot earn it, and we don’t deserve it. Yet God gives us this forgiveness for one reason: he loves us. The most beautiful thing about grace is that it doesn’t come to us once. It keeps rolling over us, like waves. And God has promised this grace to us, in a real, tangible way: through the waters of baptism.

Here’s the extraordinary thing about baptism. It is not just ordinary water. When God connects his word to the water, he gives us a real promise: forgiveness of sins, rescue from death and made part of God’s family, forever. In baptism. God seals us with his Holy Spirit and marks us with the cross of Christ, forever. In baptism, God is at work, saving us, claiming us and calling us his beloved kids. With each wave of water — baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit — we are covered in God’s grace.

Our bible passages today point us to the promise of God’s grace. In Romans, Paul explains that when we are baptized into Christ Jesus, we are baptized into his death. This means our old life — the life that is shaped by our sin and separation from God — is buried with Jesus. But that’s not the end of the story. Just as Jesus was raised from the dead, we are raised too. Baptism raises us to new life in Christ — fully forgiven, forever. In Titus, we’re reminded that God’s grace comes to us as a gift. God saves us not because of what we do, but because of his love, mercy and grace.

Today our teens travel to Lake Superior today and watch the waves roll in. Think about the times you've by an ocean, a lake or... Lake Superior. Remember how the waves don’t run out? The waves don’t stop. They keep reaching the shore without fail. May those waves remind you of the God’s grace. You may doubt, struggle, mess up or wander — but the waves of God’s grace won’t run out. His grace for you will never stop. His grace will keep coming in, without fail. Wave upon wave upon wave of grace.

Tuesday | Thirsty for More

📖 Read:
John 4:1 — 26

🌊 Dive Deeper:
Picture it. It’s the second hour of exercising or doing an outdoor project in the heat. You’ve been working hard, you’re soaked in sweat and your muscles burn. You take a break and grab your water bottle. The ice cold water is like heaven. You’re so thirsty you chug the whole thing. Ahhh. But you know what happens, right? You go back to what you were working on and before long, you’re thirsty again. That’s how thirst works. It gets satisfied, but only for a moment. Eventually, the thirst returns.

A lot of life feels like that, right? We chase things that we think will satisfy us — our family, our job, our kids activities, our grandkids, follows on our socials. For a while, it feels like we’re satisfied. But it doesn’t last. Eventually, our thirst returns. So we go back to the same things, thinking this time we’ll get full. We’re constantly seeking things we know will never satisfy us.

This is exactly the situation in our bible reading for today. We encounter a woman at a well. She comes alone, in the middle of the day, carrying a water jar, something she’s done many times before. She is there to get water, enough to quench her thirst for another day. But this isn’t just another day.

When she arrives at the well, she meets Jesus. He starts a conversation with her, first asking for a drink, before speaking of water that will forever satisfy. At first, the woman is confused and thinks Jesus is talking about actual water. She says “I want this water! Give it to me so I can stop coming to get water!” But Jesus is talking about a deeper thirst.

The thirst we feel isn’t just for more stuff or influence. It’s a deeper thirst for our identity, meaning and purpose. We can search for the things of this world to satisfy our thirst, temporarily. Or, we can go to Jesus, the Living Water, and discover a satisfaction that lasts. Jesus and the life he offers is the more we’re thirsty for.
As you go about your day today, think about the ways you look for meaning in things that will never satisfy. What does it mean to realize you need and want something more? As you search, remember: Jesus is already there — meeting you in the ordinary, offering something more.

Hey Church Family -

We know you care about our kids and teens. We know you love watching their faith come to life. And we know you value making inviting spaces for them and that painting the Christian Education classrooms is a MUCH needed update for our ministries. By pitching in and doing this time intensive task together, we’re saving many, many, MANY thousands of dollars.

So we’re coming to you tonight with an appeal.

We had our first painting day today. We got a good start on the project, and wow it makes a difference. Thank you to those who were able to assist. Your work was a huge asset! Look how fresh that hallway looks!

However, there is a LOT of prep work that goes in to painting - taping off, cutting in. This work takes a lot of time and takes many hands. Even with those who came to help today, we didn’t get as far as we hoped. We need more hands.

Our next painting day is this Wednesday, June 17, from 9 am - 3 pm. Just show up! Or text Maddie at 701-205-9599 to let her know you can help!

Every set of hands makes a difference. If you are able help - even for an hour or two - it will help us reach our goal of having this vital project checked off our list.

Monday | Caught In The Current

📖 Read:
Ephesians 2:1 — 3, Romans 12:1 — 2, John 16:33

🌊 Dive Deeper:
Think about your life right now. What would you say is shaping you the most? Not the things you want to be shaping you — but the things that are. Is it your friends and what they think is acceptable? Maybe it’s co-workers and the way they expect you to show up and perform. It could be social media and the desire to be liked, followed and shared. Maybe its your spouse, kids, extended family and their expectations.

The truth is, the things that shape us don’t usually feel like major decisions or that big of a deal. It’s not something you really choose, it just sort of carries you along.
Kind of like a current.

A current is a movement of water that flows through rivers, lakes and oceans. Currents carry things along, shape shorelines and have the power to totally change the landscape. Even when you can’t see them, currents are at work moving, shaping and changing things.

Our lives are a lot like currents. What we’re in every day becomes normal and what feels normal starts to shape what we expect, want and do. These life currents don’t just shape our lives, though. They can also begin to shape our faith.

It happens slowly, almost without noticing. Maybe you want to grow in faith, but what others think and do pulls you way. Perhaps you find yourself leaning more on the opinions of people and less on the word of God and prayer. You might want to be all in at church or worship, but the expectations and demands on your time wear you down. Faith starts to feel less like something leading you and more like something you’re trying to fit in. Before you know it, these currents are shaping and changing your faith and your commitment to it. Do you feel this? I know I do.

This isn’t new.

In our Ephesians passage, we read about how people had followed the ways of the world. As they were carried along by the currents, it led away from God and into sin. In Romans, we’re encouraged to not conform to the patterns of the world. Rather, we’re challenged to be transformed! These passages help us see and understand our own experience of getting swept up and being shaped by the currents. But even more, they reminds us that in Christ Jesus, we can be transformed, as our faith in Jesus becomes what most shapes us. As we are shaped by Jesus, we become more comfortable and confident in going against the flow.
