👋🏼 Everybody say hi to Breanna and Andrew, two of our newest covenant partners.

Andrew and Breanna found First Pres while walking downtown and were drawn in by the "Spirit-full" services.

Breanna is a stay-at-home mom who homeschools their nearly five-year-old son. She is passionate about "slow living," herbalism, and cooking from scratch. She is deeply grateful for the stability and health Jesus has brought to her life since 2020. “Jesus has made every difference in my life, she says. Sometimes I look back and can't believe how far he's brought me in just 5 years! And for that I'm eternally grateful. “

Andrew works for Rockingham County Public Works in Water Utilities. He experienced a powerful personal conversion in 2013 and is currently praying about moving into ministry. He is an avid reader of theology and loves hunting, fishing, and outdoor exercise.

Andrew says Jesus “has made all the difference. My goals, priorities, and lifestyle is all geared and directed to be more like Jesus.”

What do you do when you come up against a situation where you don’t know what to do?

I think 2 Chronicles 20 shows us a way. In that passage, we see that the kingdom was being invaded by a huge army. As this happens, we see the people do two things we should imitate (verse 12).

First, they openly confess they don’t know what to do, and that is a key starting place because for many of us simply admitting we don’t know what to do is hard.

Then they say, “...but our eyes are on you.” That, too, is huge. We often don’t know what to do, but as believers we have direct access to the One who does.

With their eyes on God, the people are then able to joyfully obey when he tells them what to do. I particularly want you to note the joyful aspect of their obedience because in verse 22 the text is clear that God acted in their situation as they “began to sing and praise.”

So, when you come up against something where you don’t know what to do, try it: confess, look to God and joyfully obey his leading.

👋🏼 Everybody say hello to John, one of our newest covenant partners.

John joined us after relocating to Harrisonburg to marry his wife, Jennifer. A retired police officer from Maryland with 25 years of experience in arson investigation and in bomb squad and dive teams, John also served as a volunteer fire captain for nearly three decades.

John believes that Jesus led him to this new chapter as a fire safety and emergency management coordinator at JMU and as a member of First Pres. He is excited to reignite his relationship with Christ and see God’s plan unfold in this community.

“Jesus has shown me that the struggles in life have a purpose,” he says. “He is now showing me why I'm still here and what his plan is for me. I'm excited to expand my relationship with Jesus.”

🎉 We're excited to announce 3️⃣ big family events for the summer.

🍿 First up, it's an outdoor movie night on July 17 in the First Pres Courtyard on Court Square. Doors open at 8 p.m. with games and snacks, and the movie, "Inside Out," starts at 9 p.m. Bring a blanket or chairs.

😎 Next up is Summer JAM Camp, our three-day experience for kids through fifth grade. It's July 29-31 from 9:15-noon.

🍿 Finally, we'll host another outdoor movie night on August 7 in the First Pres Courtyard on Court Square. Doors open at 8 p.m. with games and snacks, and the movie, "David," starts at 8:45 p.m.

This Bible verse is leading people in Iran 🇮🇷 to Jesus.⁠

What do you think it is?⁠

Most would guess John 3:16 ("For God so loved that world, that he gave his only son..."). But it's actually something else.⁠
⁠
Sasan Tavassoli, an Iranian native and pastor who is helping lead people in his homeland to Jesus, told us on Sunday that this is the verse leading many to faith:⁠
⁠
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” ⁠
⁠
Jesus' words in Matthew 11:28-30 resonate with Iranians because in the midst of trauma, suffering and oppression, they are seeking the kind of freedom Jesus is talking about.⁠
⁠
And so, even in the midst of all that is happening in Iran, the number of people coming to Jesus in Iran "is still strong," he told us.⁠
⁠
"God is at work and the church is growing in the midst of suffering and persecution," Sasan said.

🙏🏼 Keep praying for ⁠persecuted Christians in Iran. And pray, too, for the many there who still don't know Jesus.
