Robert Etbauer was the trailblazer of the famed Etbauer brothers, the oldest sibling to leave their rural South Dakota roots and make his mark on the rodeo circuit. He quickly proved he belonged, earning PRCA Saddle Bronc Riding Rookie of the Year honors in 1985 and later capturing consecutive world championships in 1990 and 1991.

Over the course of his career, Robert qualified for the National Finals Rodeo 12 times (1988–92, 1994–2000). His consistency was remarkable—he finished in the world’s top 10 in 11 of those appearances, including seven seasons in the top five. In 1992, he came within reach of another title, finishing as reserve world champion behind his younger brother, Billy.

Robert, Billy, and Dan Etbauer—along with close friend Craig Latham, often called “the fourth Etbauer”—formed one of saddle bronc riding’s most dominant groups of the 1990s. During an 11-year stretch, Robert and Billy alone combined to win seven world championships.

The group traveled the rodeo trail together, sharing expenses and approaching their careers with a team mindset. Their collective dominance mirrored legendary sports dynasties like the Yankees of the 1950s or the Packers of the 1960s. Altogether, they amassed 52 National Finals Rodeo qualifications, with Dan earning 10 and Latham adding nine of his own.

In fact, the Etbauers made history as the only trio of brothers to qualify for the NFR in the same roughstock event in the same year—an achievement they accomplished an incredible eight times.

Lately, we have seen an increasing number of drivers not following the Kansas School Bus Stop Arm Law around Liberal. Our bus drivers activate the warning lights (amber lights) as a warning they are about to stop prior to activating the red flashing lights and stop arm, which allows other drivers time to slow down and stop. When the red lights are flashing and the stop arm is activated you may not pass or go around the bus. Motorists approaching buses from the opposite direction must also stop to allow students to safely cross the street if needed. The safety of our students will remain our top priority from the moment they enter our care. Please take time to review the attached document and continue to remain vigilant around our buses and buildings. Our bus drivers do a tremendous job navigating our streets and schools and they deserve to have a community that helps them and follows the law. In the near future, we will be working with the Liberal Police Department to ensure all motorists are following this law in the mornings and afternoons to make sure our students are as safe as possible. We appreciate your cooperation!
