One of the hidden heroes of the Book of Acts is a man named Barnabas. His given name was Joseph, but the apostles called him Barnabas, which means “son of encouragement.” It was a nickname based on his character. He was the kind of person who encouraged, picked people up, cheered them on, and helped others feel like they belonged. That’s exactly what he did for Saul in Acts 9.
When Saul shows up in Jerusalem and tries to join the disciples, they are not exactly rolling out the welcome mat. Acts 9:26 says, “When Saul came to Jerusalem, he tried to join the disciples, but they were all afraid of him, not believing that he really was a disciple.” Which is understandable. This is the same guy who had been arresting Christians a few weeks ago. They wanted nothing to do with him.
“But Barnabas took him and brought him to the apostles. He told them how Saul, on his journey, had seen the Lord and that the Lord had spoken to him, and how in Damascus he had preached fearlessly in the name of Jesus.”
Acts 9:27
Barnabas stood up for Saul. He encouraged him. He invited him in. He offered him a seat at the table. Barnabas didn’t define Saul by who he had been; he encouraged who he was becoming.
Three Ways to Be a Barnabas Today
1. Reach out to someone who needs a word of encouragement
2. Tell someone what you appreciate about them
3. Ask someone how you can be praying for them
