Imago Dei: A Therapist's Reflection on Trauma, Addiction, and Human Worth

As a therapist working with trauma, addiction, and mental illness, I am continually amazed by the complexity of God's design. Neuroscience reveals the incredible order of the brain, but being made in the image of God (Imago Dei) goes far beyond our neurobiology.

Scripture teaches that every person bears God's image and possesses inherent dignity and worth. This truth is especially important when working with individuals who carry deep wounds and ask difficult questions:

Why am I this way?
Why was I abused?
Why do I struggle so much?
Did God make a mistake when He created me?

The reality of trauma, addiction, anxiety, depression, and other forms of suffering reminds us that we live in a fallen and broken world. Trauma may alter neural pathways. Addiction may hijack reward systems. Mental illness may impact thoughts, emotions, and behavior.

Yet none of these realities erase the image of God within a person.

The client sitting across from us is more than a diagnosis, a trauma history, or a collection of symptoms. Beneath the wounds remains a person created in God's image. Someone with inherent worth, dignity, and the capacity for a relationship with God.

Healing is often about rediscovering who God created us to be.

Even amid suffering, the image of God remains.

Genesis 1:27
So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

Do you ever feel like you're behind?

Behind in your healing.
Behind in your purpose.
Behind in life.

It's easy to look around and feel like everyone else is moving ahead while you're still trying to rebuild.

But what if you're not behind at all?

What if God is working on a timeline that's completely different from the world's?

This week's devotional explores the powerful promise found in Joel 2:25 and reminds us that it is never too late for God to restore what has been lost.

Sis, let’s be honest – moving forward and looking to the future isn’t always easy, is it?

There are moments when the past beckons, and our thoughts drift into “what if…” or “if only…”

This week, we’re beginning a new series exploring the tension between regret and redemption.

As my uncle recently shared with me while reflecting on my father, his brother, whom we lost five years ago: “Regret looks backwards — faith looks forward.”

This week’s devotional is an invitation to notice where your gaze has been, and to begin gently redirecting it forward.

Listen…

Mary Magdalene is the girl. I don’t care what anybody says—she was ride or die for Jesus. And y’all, don’t skip over her story just because it makes religious folks squirm a little.
Some say she was a pr******te, some say she wasn’t—but what we do know is this: sis had seven demons cast out of her (Luke 8:2).

SEVEN.

That’s not a bad day… that’s a spiritual ICU.

But here’s the part that wrecks me: Jesus didn’t avoid her. He delivered her.

He didn’t shame her. He saved her.
And after He set her free, she never left His side.

She wasn’t just around for the miracles and the crowd—she followed Him all the way to the foot of the cross when everybody else was bailing out and hiding.

And when they laid Him in the tomb, she stayed close. And on resurrection morning?
She was the first person He appeared to.
Not Peter.
Not John.
Mary.
The one with the past.
The one nobody saw coming.
The one He called by name in the middle of her heartbreak (John 20:16).

And I say all that to say this:
If you’ve been through hell…
If you’ve battled addiction, abuse, trauma, shame…
If you’ve ever thought you were too far gone to be used by God…

Remember Mary.

Because Jesus didn’t just clean her up—He trusted her with the message that He was alive.
Let me tell you something: that same power that raised Jesus from the dead lives in YOU (Romans 8:11). He can heal what tried to destroy you. He can restore what was stolen. He’ll meet you in your lowest place and call you by name.

So don’t you dare let the enemy use your past to quiet your calling.

If He used Mary Magdalene—He can sure enough use you.

Prayer for peace...

Lord,

Thank You for calling me to a life of peace.
You see the ways I’ve been conditioned to live in stress, urgency, and survival.

Gently retrain my mind and body to rest in what You are offering me.

When peace feels unfamiliar, help me not to run from it or disrupt it, but to receive it. Teach me how to remain in Your presence and trust that I am safe with You.

Let Your peace settle deeply within me and become the place I return to again and again.
Amen.
