On the morning of Aug. 29, His Eminence Metropolitan Saba joined Fr. David Hyatt and the faithful of St. Michael's Greensburg, Pa. for the divine services for the commemoration of the Beheading of the Holy Glorious Prophet, Forerunner and Baptist John.

During the Hierarchal Divine Liturgy, His Eminence preached on the two key figures in the day’s gospel reading (Mark 6:14-30), St. John and King Herod, asking the question, “Which man is truly free?”

St. John reminds us of the importance of believing the gospel, living the gospel, and then speaking the gospel in love, His Eminence said. King Herod demonstrates a life that is controlled by the passions, leading him to kill the Prophet even though he had some affection for him.

Herod’s passions controlled his life and although he was a king in a palace, he was actually a slave. While St. John, being confined in a prison, was truly free because he believed, lived, and spoke the gospel in love. Sayidna Saba called the clergy and faithful to follow the example of St. John in order to be free in the love of God.

Following the liturgy, His Eminence joined the clergy and faithful for a fasting fellowship meal, as well as a time of questions and conversation during which Sayidna Saba encouraged everyone to foster a family atmosphere where all are welcomed and loved and connected to the spiritual family of the Body of Christ, both on earth and in the heavens.

Metropolitan Saba was joined by Fr. Harith Ibrahim, Fr. Habib McGee, and Dn. Paisios Asfoura.

Why do we celebrate the day of Saint John’s death?

On Saturday, August 29th, we commemorate the beheading of St. John the Baptist by serving the divine liturgy. What we are really celebrating on the day of the feast of the Beheading of Saint John the Baptist is his courage to witness to the Truth, to stand up and say to the king that what he was doing was wrong. The story of Saint John’s life and death can actually teach us a lot about courage, truth, and love. Regardless of the circumstance, Saint John teaches us to be honest and to stand up for what we believe, until the very end.

On the 11th of September, the Orthodox Christians that follow the Julian calendar commemorate Saint John the Forerunner by celebrating the feast day of his Martyrdom. John the Baptist, the cousin of Jesus Christ.
