In our Be Like Jesus series, we’ll discover how God invites us to look more like Jesus each month, year, and decade of our lives. Yet, all our determination and best effort will not get us there. It is only with the help of God’s Spirit that we become like Jesus. During this series, you’ll join kids in exploring teachings from the New Testament that will lift the burden of self-powered character development and reveal the freedom that comes when we partner with the Holy Spirit on the journey of becoming like Jesus.

When we follow Jesus, the Holy Spirit comes to dwell in us. We then get to tell others about the amazing Jesus we know! In our story, Paul encouraged followers of Jesus to take up the shield of faith and put on the armor of God. What does it mean to you to take up the shield of faith? This week we’ll explore what Paul wrote about the armor of God! In his letter to the Ephesians, Paul encourages them to “be strong in the Lord Jesus.”

Paul goes on to describe that the Holy Spirit’s protection against the devil’s tricks is like putting on a suit of armor. Each piece of armor has a purpose.

To stand against the devil’s sneaky plans, we need: the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, feet fitted with readiness, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, the sword of truth. When we put on the armor of God, we can be strong in Jesus and stand firm in our obedience to Him! The Holy Spirit gives us strength!

God invites us into His story, which means sharing His love with others so that they too will believe and receive His Holy Spirit. What is something new that God is teaching you? Post a comment, sharing your answer to this week’s family question.

This week we will explore a time when God’s Spirit made it clear that the good news about Jesus is for everyone.

A certain Roman military officer loved God and wanted to follow Him. God sent a special message to this man, named Cornelius, to have the disciple Peter brought to his house. God sent a special message to Peter too! Peter needed to know it’s okay to go into Cornelius’ home and to share lunch with a Roman.

Peter ends up sharing the story of Jesus with Cornelius and all the people living in his household. And while Peter was still speaking, the Holy Spirit fills everyone in the house! Jesus gives the gift of the Holy Spirit to everyone who believes!
