I don't believe God needs Christians to defend God.
Too often, Christianity becomes a battle: we have to defeat the other side, win the argument, take back the culture, or make sure our people are in control.

But that looks very different from Jesus.

Jesus had opportunities to seize power, and he refused. He had enemies, and he told his followers to love them. When violence was used against him, he didn't respond with more violence. Jesus showed us that God's way of changing the world isn't domination—it is self-giving love.

Christianity was never supposed to be about Christians gaining more power. Jesus showed us that it was always about laying down whatever power we have in order to bring life and love to others.

Have you ever thought that church seems to be a place where you learn which people don’t belong? Or maybe, where you learn who to be mad at?

I’ve never understood churches like this. While Christ is supposed to bring joy, too many times people declare that they are angry precisely in the name of Jesus! It has never sat well with me.

Jesus continually moved toward people others had judged unworthy. He ate with them. He listened to them. He defended them. He reminded them that they mattered. It is my opinion that, instead of telling people why they don't belong, churches should spend their time showing people the love of Christ: that all people are worthy of love, dignity and acceptance.

It is becoming increasingly difficult to see how Christianity is different from a world run on power and tribalism. This is because the loudest voices that proclaim to be Christian, proclaim a gospel much different than what Jesus taught. When the world tells us to win, Jesus teaches us to serve. When the world tells us to get even, Jesus teaches us to forgive. When the world tells us to protect our own, Jesus teaches us to love our neighbor—and even our enemy.
That doesn't make life easier. In fact, it often challenges us to rethink what success, strength, and faithfulness really look like. It is in this way of self-giving love that we discover the life God intended for us all along.
