Why was the oak so important to the Druids?
Few trees are as closely associated with the Druids and the ancient Celtic world as the mighty oak. But the connection is more interesting than simply saying that Druids “worshipped oak trees”.
One of our most famous ancient accounts comes from the Roman writer Pliny the Elder.
Writing in the 1st century AD, he claimed that Druids in Gaul considered nothing more sacred than mistletoe and the tree upon which it grew, particularly the oak. He described an elaborate ritual in which mistletoe was cut using a golden sickle.
The oak itself would have been an impressive presence in the ancient landscape. Long-lived, enormous and capable of surviving for generations, it naturally became associated with strength, endurance and permanence.
Later Celtic traditions also preserved the oak as an important tree, although we should be careful not to assume that every later belief reflects ancient Druid practice.
We know frustratingly little about what the Druids themselves actually believed because they left us no written religious texts.
Perhaps that is what makes the oak so fascinating.
When you stand beneath an ancient oak today, it is easy to understand why people thousands of years ago might have regarded such a tree with awe.
