In our passage from last week, we see a refreshing drop or two of hope in Naomi after Ruth returns from the fields of Boaz. And now, toward the end of the barley harvest, Naomi shows more signs of hopefulness by initiating a match between Ruth and Boaz. This hope helps Naomi initiate; nudges her to form a strategy for future protection; moves her to stop focusing on what’s been lost so she (and Ruth) can make another “Discovery in the Desert.” There’s always more of God’s lovingkindness to be found!

Last week's passage, Ruth chapter one, ended with Naomi being honest. But it also ended with Ruth displaying incredible love and loyalty. This week, we continue with Ruth chapter two. What happens – in this story and in our stories as well – is all connected to the Sovereign God who is full of Hesed (lovingkindness). Whether it’s the power of a Life-Giving Law that commands people to be generous with their crops or a delicious Lunch and leftovers, God keeps coming at us with His relentless tenderness.

This week kicks off a new sermon series, “Discoveries in the Deserts of Life.” What happens when you find yourself in the “Deserts of Life”? When your life feels like God-forsaken barrenness? When life dries up? The Book of Ruth shows us there’s beauty to be found in the desert as well as in the midst of our honest struggles and bitterness. In the first chapter of Ruth, Naomi is bitter. This is where she really is and the best place to start is always where you really are. What beauty is there to discover here at the end of the first chapter of Ruth? The picture of incredible friendship and loyalty.
