Do we think of God as a product to solve our problems?

“God, Fix This!” – but is that the best prayer to pray?

Luke 8:22-25

The disciples are right where Jesus told them to go, but it’s a storm!

Does waking Jesus up so he can help indicate faith?

Jesus rescues them, but asks, “Where is your faith?”

The Small Story = Pursuit of comfort, happiness and a Problem-Free Life

Does God’s love and goodness obligate him to please us?

We exist for God, not the other way around!

From the Small Story to the Big Story – Knowing God and seeking his will over our comfort.

Hebrews 11:6

Pleasing God comes only through faith, and faith comes only through seeking God.

Would we be willing to stay in the storm in order to know God more?

KNOWING GOD IS A GREATER PRIZE THAN LIVING PROBLEM-FREE!

Light in the Darkness – Attractive or Intimidating?

Luke 8:16-21

The Word of God is the Light, revealing what is hidden.

His family arrives, and Jesus invites all Disciples to be considered Family.

1 John 1:5-2:2

Jesus calls on us to step into the Light, but does that come with exposure and shame?

The purpose is not shame, but healing.

In Reality, Darkness is the place of guilt, shame and fear.

Come in to the Light = Confession. How will Jesus respond?

DO WE WANT TO REMAIN HIDDEN, OR EXPERIENCE THE LIGHT THAT DRIVES AWAY THE DARKNESS?

Greek Makarios = state of being blessed/happy.

Greek Eulogeo = Action of asking for or receiving divine favor.

Psalm 67

We can ask God to bless us even though we don’t deserve it – based on the Giver not the Receiver.

GOD’S BLESSINGS ARE PART OF FULFILLING HIS PURPOSE IN OUR LIVES…SO GO AHEAD AND ASK!

God’s blessings reveal his presence in our lives.

Asking for blessings is act of trust in God’s goodness.

God’s blessings lead us to give Glory to God.

God is the center and purpose of everything, so giving him glory also fulfills purpose in our lives.

God’s blessings lead others to know and worship him.

We are to use/pass on God’s blessings to others.

GOD’S BLESSINGS ARE PART OF FULFILLING HIS PURPOSE IN OUR LIVES…SO GO AHEAD AND ASK!

Luke 7:36-50

The Lawbreaker – A woman with a reputation for leading a sinful lifestyle.

She has almost certainly become a follower of Jesus prior to this passage.

She wants to honor and worship Jesus, probably by anointing his head and hands with perfume.

The Lawkeeper – Simon, the Pharisee

Society dictates that the host honor and provide for his guests – foot washing, oil, a kiss and an invitation to sit.

Simon rudely did not offer any of these to Jesus!

The Lawbreaker is driven to restore Jesus’ honor, but what can she do?

Washing Jesus’ feet is probably an impromptu act, or else she would have brought water and a towel.

Her act is worshipful, loving and honoring…and also outrageous, shocking and inappropriate!

Jesus accepts her act as worship – similar to David dancing before the Lord, not for those watching.

The Lawkeeper expects Jesus to distance himself from the woman

Jesus instead defends her, taking her humiliation upon himself.

“Simon, do you SEE this woman?”

“It ain’t broke…it just needs to be fixed.”

Luke 7:24-35

Vs. 24-26 – Jesus affirms John’s role as a Prophet

Vs. 27 – The quote from Malachi affirms John and points to Jesus as Messiah.

Vs. 28 – John is the Greatest of those born of the Flesh, but eclipsed to being born of the Spirit!

Vs. 29-30 – John prepared people to follow Jesus by calling for repentance.
Those who listened and followed Jesus moved beyond John’s message.
Those who rejected John could not recognize Jesus and stayed stuck in their Flesh.

Vs. 31-32 – The Parable of the Brats

Vs. 33-34 – Attacking style in order to ignore substance.

Vs. 35 – The truth is revealed by the fruits.

John pointed to the Kingdom, while Jesus brings us into it.

Who are we as citizens of the Kingdom of God?

KINGDOM LIVING IS AMAZING! LET’S LIVE IT!

What difference does it make to live in the Kingdom of God today?

Jesus’ ministry causes many to struggle with understanding God’s plan, even John the Baptist!

Luke 7:18-20

John questions whether Jesus is really the Messiah he was sent to prepare the way for. Why?

Mal. 3:1; 4:5-6

The Prophecy and Identity of John the Baptist

Luke 3:15-17

Is Jesus doing the things John predicted the Messiah would do? Hint: No.

Luke 7:21-23

Jesus’ response is to display his power, but by continuing to help individuals, not start a rebellion.

Challenge – Trust Jesus on the path he sets rather than judge Jesus based on the path we assume.

“Scandalon” = Stumbling Block.

Isa 8:14-15

How is Jesus a Scandalon to us?

Believers, not Knowers!
