This Sunday we will celebrate the life and work of George Liele, the (often overlooked) first overseas missionary from the United States. 10 years before William Carey, Liele -- a former slave and Baptist minister -- left home to preach the gospel in Jamaica.

We recognize these men by recognizing that their legacy encourages us to send more African American and Black missionaries. The world’s greatest problem is still lostness. No problem should unify us more because, in the gospel, God has given the solution. Together, we share the good news of Jesus with people and places who have never heard the good news of salvation through Christ.

On the fifth day of Christmas my true love gave to me: five fatal blows?

Today is the Feast Day of St. Thomas Becket. On this day in 1170 Thomas Becket was murdered in Canterbury Cathedral by four knights who thought they were carrying out King Henry II's command. You can read about the incident and conflict yourself, but the nutshell is that Becket and the king clashed over the independence of the church from state rule.

Want to celebrate today well? Don’t fall for the lies of power. Christmas is all about turning the power structures of the world upside-down. To be a Christian is to shun, as Jesus did, the offer to use power to serve ourselves or to force others to worship as we do.

On the 4th Day of Christmas we remember the slaughter of the innocents by Herod:

We remember today, O God, the slaughter of the holy innocents of Bethlehem by King Herod. Receive, we pray, into the arms of your mercy all innocent victims; and by your great might frustrate the designs of evil tyrants and establish your rule of justice, love, and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Today is the third day of Christmas! I hope you're not done celebrating. This is a twelve day party that's just getting started!

Today is the Feast of St. John the Apostle. His gospel gives us the phrase, "In the beginning was the word and the word was with God and the word was God..." among so many other beautiful ones. John was a faithful friend to Jesus. He was there at the crucifixion, and from the cross Jesus entrusted his mother, Mary, to John's care.

Ever wonder what it meant that Good King Wenceslas looked out on the "Feast of Stephen?"

It's today! On the second day of Christmas, the global church remembers Stephen, killed for sharing his faith.

Why so close to December 25? As one ancient prayer puts it: “Yesterday the Lord was born on earth, that Stephen might be born in heaven.”

Thank you, Jesus, for making a Way.

Day 4️⃣ of | We will reach the lost through partnership 🤝

IMB missionaries Matt and Gretchen Clay saw the passion rising as a group of local pastors and lay ministers figured out ways to introduce their North African neighbors to the gospel.

The dreams discussed around the table were big, like prison ministry and developing national missionaries.

While feeling unable to make these dreams happen with the resources they had, they knew who could.

The missionaries called their partnering churches in Florida — Fruit Cove Baptist Church and Aspire Church — and asked for help in mentoring and empowering these believers to multiply and plant new churches.

Prayer Points:

🙏 Pray for these partners as they seek to take the gospel to areas previously untouched by the good news of Jesus Christ.

🙏 Praise God for requests to be trained and mentored.

🙏 Ask for continued fruit in the work of the Clays, who are a steadfast presence among the lost.
