Important FYI! Our church was the target of a recent phishing attack, and unfortunately, loads of contact info was obtained by people with nefarious intent.
This is a good time to get educated on what a phishing attack looks like, and how to make sure you do not unwittingly share information or give money to an imposter.
The most recent set of emails being reported are coming from "[email protected]". THIS IS NOT PASTOR JASON. All Waypoint emails end in "-church.org" without exception. While we all also have personal emails, if you do not already know them, do not assume they are safe. These attempts will likely continue, coming from fake emails pretending to be Pastor Jason, Pastor Mark, Pastor Drew, or anyone else associated with the church. They could even appear to come from church members needing help.
We will not ask you for money via email, sight unseen, without prior context. Always double check before responding, giving money, information, or even clicking links at all.
Phishing attempts often have clues you can look out for:
1. Phrases like "account on hold" or demands for immediate action.
2. Links that lead to suspicious websites that are not our website.
3. Requests for "discretion" without any clue of the subject matter.
4. Requests that include "Kindly respond..."
5. Strange formatting, random different fonts.
6. Addresses that look a little bit off, like "microsft.com".
As far as we are aware, contact info is all that was compromised. It can be limited as such. If you suspect phishing, feel free to DM us or call us. If you know that it is fraud, report it as such. These people are intelligent and strategic, and this likely won't stop any time soon.
This is also a good time to remind us all: This was the result of an innocent mistake. The evil being carried out as a result is the sin of the aggressor. Let's show grace within our community, while being "Shrewd as snakes, and as innocent as doves."
Please don't hesitate to reach out. And of course, report all such emails as fraudulent, if you have a way to do so. We are sorry for the inconvenience and insecurity that this causes so many.
