d we honor each person’s unique religious path. We also cherish religious community, so together we worship, learn, play, celebrate life’s passages, and share pastoral support. BUUF became a “Welcoming Congregation” in 2006. BUUF members and ministers have been visible advocates for the LGBT community over the years, including participating in annual PRIDE events and in civil disobedience efforts in the spring of 2014 focused on adding the LGBTQIA (le***an, gay, bisexual, transgender, q***r, questioning, intersex and asexual) community to the Idaho Human Rights Act to ensure employment and housing protections. On Tuesday, our minister, the Rev. Sara LaWall, was found guilty of misdemeanor trespassing for refusing to leave the Idaho Governor’s office during a sit-in protesting legislation targeting transgender Idahoans.

We want to be very clear: we stand with Sara and the 8 others who were arrested that day--4 of them part of our Fellowship.

Sara was at the Governor’s office with a large group of faith community members & leaders and trans community members, advocates and allies because trans people and their families deserve to be heard. They were there because laws that criminalize transgender people and forcibly out transgender kids are causing real harm. She was there because our faith calls us to speak up when the dignity and humanity of our neighbors are under attack.

Yes, Sara and the 8 others stayed after they were asked to leave. She has never disputed that. She made a choice to engage in an act of civil disobedience because she believed the stakes were—and remain—too high to simply walk away.

We are proud of our minister for putting her values into action. We are grateful for her courage, her willingness to stand alongside our trans siblings and their families, and her commitment to a faith that demands more from us than thoughts and prayers.

And we know Sara is not standing alone.

She is surrounded by this congregation, by the people who stood beside her at the Capitol, and by a growing community of people who believe that trans people belong, trans kids deserve safety, and every person deserves to live with dignity and freedom.

The verdict does not change what we believe. It does not change who we are called to be.

We will keep showing up.
We will keep speaking out.
We will keep standing with our trans neighbors.

Today's service took us on a fantastic journey through "The Odyssey of Unitarian Universalism," mapping some moments in our UU History alongside the challenges Odysseus faced on his journey home. Highlights included, The Humanist Controversy, The UU Women's Movement, Transcendentalism, and our very own UU Siren Songs. It was quite a journey!

Plus, our chancel design also played with the theme featuring this extraordinary boat-like arrangement by Eileen Oldag and music form Lessie Brown & Rose! We have such a talented community.

Idaho was a plaintiff in this recent Supreme Court Case & decision against trans athletes. This is but one piece of legislation in a long line of attacks against our trans community.

And, we will keep fighting back.

As UUs, it is our job — our calling — to support and accompany people — all people — in living their most whole, holy, authentic, faithful lives. Our Boise church community embodies this same practice with each other and with our community.

One of our guiding principles affirms “the inherent worth and dignity of every person.” One of the ways we live out that principle is in identifying ourselves as a welcoming congregation. In our denomination, this means we openly, unequivocally, enthusiastically welcome LGBTQ+ people, youth, and families among us and that we have done our work to fully integrate them into our worship and congregational life. In 2022 we passed a congregational resolution affirming and pledging our support to our trans and non-binary community. Because we believe every person is worthy. Every person is beautiful. Every person belongs. And everyone is welcome.
